I have been very distant on here for the past few months but we have been very busy with the growing.
We have dug up our first potatoes tonight and they are currently cooking
Our lettuce that wasn't picked has now boltedso we now to try and replant more.
I agree with Mrbadexample that you will know when your radishes need picking. I love them in my salad's and sandwiches
You all seem to be doing great I will try and catch up more soon
Hope the tatties were tasty alliwant and congrats on the weight loss - fantastic0 -
Bah! I'm so disappointed, noticed some brown on my pumpkin today and the flower had rotted and made the very end of the pumpkin soft
Worst thing is I've been dilligently cutting off the smaller ones to give the larger one a chance, thus meaning I only have the one bud left on the plant (which I missed) to come good.
Have a few more smaller pumpkins in pots so it may be that one of those gets the attention now.0 -
Thanks for responses!
Now here's a dumb question, Can I sow my leaves etc every 2 weeks in the same pots?
Kimmee : re the rocket: I wasn't cutting the whole plant, just pulling leaves but it wasn't regrowing and is looking all wrong so think this is bolting. Almost looks like it's going to flower. I've read that may be due to hot weather conditions so maybe I need to find a cooler spot during this warm spell!!
Cheers0 -
Does anybody know if I can plant leeks in soil that was previously used to grow onions or potatoes? I need to plant out some leeks soon and I don't have any more room left on the ground, so I was hoping to re-use the soil (well it's compost actually) in either my potato or onion sacks which will soon be empty.0

Hmmm, when I was picking off my leaves, the plant was still growing taller until, like yours, it looked like it would flower and then it did flower which I guess is 'bolting'. I think rocket, like salad leaves, aren't supposed to like full sun so maybe it would be better to find a cooler and shadier spot. As for sowing leaves every 2 weeks in same pot thats's what I do as long as there is room0 -
Izzwhiz- with your aubergines I found last year when I grew them for the first time that there are flowers with thin stalks and some with thicker stalks. The thin ones tended to fall off whilst the thicker ones turned into aubergines with a little help from the paintbrush. After a bit I could tell which ones would fall off.0

Hi everyone,
I just spent an hour catching up on all the posts i'd missed! A big well done to everyone, we have thing growing, yay! :j
My (nearly 3) year old has found a new passion in peas! I am yet to taste one - as soon as the back door is open she belts over and grabs them off before i'm halfway there! Last week i planted about 30 more peas, and they are showing already - she will be happy!:D
She has also been enjoying the strawberrys (its a good job i dont like them anyway)! I didnt notice loads of runners till too late so not many strawberrys as the plants are in their first year, but loads of new plants!
Potatoes 6 trugs full all high and a few flowers, will still wait a few weeks and let them grow to full potential as last year i think i dug too soon.
Cuc, 1 plant growing on windowsill.
toms, 3 bush made it after being put out without hardening off!
1 cordon given as pressie got flowers.
blueberrys - oh my!:D Tons of fruit just starting to go the dark blue/purple.... i wish i ate them, but Megan will devour in no time!
I will start using tom feed and ericaseous feed....honest! ( I am such a lazy gardener!)
Onions, loadsa green but not much growth underground!?!?!
Fruit trees.....still alive! Kiwi, growing! 1 Rasberry out of about 6/7 growing leaves! Rest are bare dead looking wood! I wont use pound shops again!
OOH, NEARLY FORGOT...... Sweetcorn! Plants that have grown outside are big and being put in ground this evening. Those done indoors were smaller but look good so gave those to my brother!
Ashamed to say, i have not even BEEN to my allotment this year:(
Too much going on, with becoming single parent and eldest dd moving out too! Next year though, BIG plans there! Lol.
Happy picking all. xx2009 - Attempting to grow my own Kitchen garden.....did it!!!
2010 - Attempting to make my garden a beautiful place for dd2 to enjoy!0 -
Can anyone tell me if its too late to sow some more carrot seeds??
Went to water my plants this morning and found all my carrots had been disturbed by my dog Millie's nose!! don't know what she was sniffing for but she's uprooted quite a lot of them, the roots were tiny and still white, even tho the leafy bits were quite tall and bushy!!
Some of the carrots look undisturbed so have left them, which leaves me with about 5 nowDebt @ LBM - £25,722 Debt now - £11,811 DFD - April 2012

You shouldn't really plant them in the same as onion because they are the same family. If you wikipedia your veg it usually tells you what family they're from and then don't plant them in soil from the same family because they tend to take similar nutrients out of the soil and also suffer from the same diseases.
Similarly, soil used for lettuce shouldn't be used for cabbages or cauliflowers, but would be fine for leeks or potatoes (for example).:A If saving money is wrong, I don't want to be right. William Shatner

Thanks Amarillo, really appreciate your help. I read on some website that you can try pulling the petals off to stop the baby fruits rotting - do you do that too?0
