I'm just posting this picture of my "Pretty in Purple" chilli plant because I'm so chuffed with it and I want to show off:

Yes. I'm reasonably sure that this one was sown on 20th Feb 2010. I have another of these with less fruit, just a bit behind in development. I also have two Purple Venezuelan and two Iranian Round, all from the Real Seed Catalogue, linked in post #2631.
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Should I take the fruit off too?

I wouldn't. Nor would I have removed any of the flowers. However, I don't know what I'm doing, and any evidence of success is entirely coincidental.

That is one beautiful plant MBE - really stunning :D

From the pics I would think you're growing it outdoors, is that right? I'm growing a few chillis (and peppers) but although they are doing well (quite a few flowers) they're nowhere near as good as yours. Thanks for sharing.

Gosh am such a slow replier! Bolting is what happens when your lettuces start to flower, apparently it happens in extreme weather conditions... oh well am intending on planting some more tomorrow. Oh just a quick question... how has everybody managed to protect their ripening strawberries?

TashaC - we have ours in window boxes on the concrete with a netting cover over the top (only way to keep the hens off them!)

mrbadexample - think you'll have to change your name to mrgoodexample. Those are fab chillies! Never seen anything like them before.

lizzyb - you need to shade the pepper's roots by putting some other pots in front. Apparently (Bob Flowerdew) they don't like their roots to get too hot.

question - please help with my aubergines! I have chilli peppers & sweet peppers with little babies, but the aubergine flowers just rot off before any aubergines form. The plants are very healthy and I've been pollinating with a paintbrush. Does anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong please??
  • Had my first raspberry today, so that one cost me just £2 and there are more to come. Next year should have loads as lots of growth on the new stuff. Courgette flowers keep on coming but I'm sure they are all male. I've got a pot of leaf spinach that I always thought never looked quite the same as the other pots I did, some different shaped leaves in there, and that has now bolted but the yellow flowers are very pretty! Also rocket has bolted but had 2 good cuttings from it.

I'm just wondering if the compost I used to grow the bolted stuff in will be ok to have a fresh lot of seeds in it?
Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!
  • I bought the seeds from here. Sadly, (or happily, depending upon which way you look at it ;) ), it's an £8.00 minimum order.

That's great how that's been grown from seed, it looks pretty big too! You obviously do have green fingers!! I'm off to check out the website now and possibly not buy anything

Started life in a heated propagator. Next couple of months on a southwest-facing kitchen windowsill (sun almost all day long), until the flowers started to form. I turned it regularly to prevent it leaning too much.

Then I started putting it in the garden when the weather was fine, although I had to bring it back in if it got even a little bit windy, because it wasn't too strong in the stem: lots of leaves + wind = flat plant! As it grew stronger, I left it outside more and more, even risking the odd overnighter as it got warmer. It now lives mostly in the greenhouse, although I do bring it outside as often as possible to ensure the flowers get pollinated. I did try to pollinate the first flower by hand, but my rhino-like touch meant I just knocked the flower off. :o

That's a job for insects, not great big clumsy blokes. ;)

Why thank you for noticing. :D

    Oh, the plant! :(

It's actually described as a miniature (the plant! :p ), but this should give you a better idea:
