Just read post about thinning out carrots, when are you supposed to do this?, doh I wonder if I am too late?
Birds keep eating my broccoli leaves, there are 2 big fat pigeons sat on our wall every morning, going to try and net them over tonight or I wont have anything left soon.
Maybe not the right place for this question but does anyone know how do you kill off ivy? Keep cutting all the leaves back but know they are just going to keep growing back till I manage to kill off the roots. Not easy to dig up as against a wall.

Boiling water from kettle twice a day for at least 3 days should do it and no nasty pesticides :D:D:D

Liz, you should be fine to thin out your carrots now. You may even get some mini ones to eat :)

My Ivy is the bane of my life. In fact it isn't my ivy. It's the tree's ivy that is behind my garden. I have no advice but just want to say I feel for you!

Thanks for the advice, ivy near my brocolli so might have to wait till I have harvested that to become an ivy killer. Wonder if it would work on ground elder too?

I'm just posting this picture of my "Pretty in Purple" chilli plant because I'm so chuffed with it and I want to show off:

That is very pretty MBE. What chilli is it? Pretty in purple?

I have a chilli plant. The flowers are white though!

I bought the seeds from here. Sadly, (or happily, depending upon which way you look at it ;) ), it's an £8.00 minimum order.

Oh, I've seen that site before and was impressed. They have a "what should I sow now for late summer, autumn and winter crops" type of page. I'm attempting to have some home grown veg all year round, even if it's just a bit of container grown salad, so their site has already been really useful.

I've got 2 pepper plants - not chilis. They are about 6"/15cm high, bushy and very vigorous. Lots of flowers and buds and one 2"-3" fruit each. Repotted recently and noticed very poor root development so have pinched off some buds/flowers in the hope that this will help the plant put energy into roots/height.

Should I take the fruit off too?

We eat a lot of peppers but I've never had much luck with growing them. For info, they are in pots in an unheated plastic greenhouse up against a warm house wall.

PS sorry for hijacking your thread
