Beetroot also in pots, funny seedlings despite being spaced individually they seemed to grow through in pairs:shocked:

Beetroot "seeds" are actually clusters of seeds, so you will normally get two or three coming up together. Just thin them out to one. ;)
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

However it has survived but it looks very weak - it has put quite a few leaves out but the stalks are very spindly. Is there anything thatI can do to help it back to health?

Doesn't sound too bad. I'm a bit of a novice too, but from what I've read, don't take a crop from it this year to give it a chance to recover and build up new reserves. A good mulch of that manure around the plant (but not touching it) over the winter should see it right.

OK the black fly infestation has savaged. My tondo courgette has gone, the runner beans have gone and ( sob) the patty pans that had survived have also gone :(

However, i have cropped some carrots ( I wanted the trug back) and some new potatoes for my tea, a courgette and some spring onions, I'll also have some beetroot leaves as well.

Dinner will be roasted veg ( potatoes, courge, carrots) With a spring onion, beetroot leaves ( and a few other bought stuff) salad. And some chicken :j Go ME!
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

I swear, I took all of them off the other day ( meticulously!)

They came back ( maybe I missed a few?) and have multiplied like HELL!

They have saveged the plants, they are covered in ants, with holes all over and completely dehydrated. The flowers are BLACK :(

    Boooo!

So I have had to dig them out of the containers, and throw the plants out. I have so far managed to clean off them from the squash plant as this is the one I really wanted to succeed and I hope it does.

I could have time enough to do another patty pan or two? Im not sure If I can be bothered now :o

On the plus side I glanced at the peas and couldnt believe that I have missed LOADS! So I cropped about 30 odd pods of them as well.

At least something has gone right!

  • I think that fresh manure will damage any plants but once it's been rotted it loses some of the acidity and should really be fine. Rhubarb from all I've read absolutely loves the stuff so I'd be very tempted to feed it and help it along.

On a seperate note, my pumpkin flower is nothing but a wilted mess this morning. I guess they're a 24 hour thing which is a shame as it was so pretty. But! I managed to snap some pics yesterday so I got it on the record! Link Here

Lynzpower, keep some weak soapy water in a sprayer and spray at the first sign of black fly, (also greenfly and red spider mite) the ants farm them.

Keep a watch on any peppers, red spider mite love them!
  • Oh before I forget does anyone have any advice on the height of french beans. I'd got some 4 foot canes which I've been using for the tomatoes and I popped them in as a makeshift thing. The beans are beginning to wind their tendrils around the canes so if I need to be looking at 8 foot canes to manage them I really need to be switching those before they grow past just being tendrils.
