  • Just a quick note for anyone wondering about the Scallions - it's just what we call spring onions, the normal bunches you buy in the supermarket, there's no difference.

Growing some myself in the back yard along with my spuds in the hope of making an (almost) 100% homegrown champ lol (apart from the milk and butter, no room for a cow with the dog :P)

Yum, I love champ. I also love colcannon (with cabbage). Agh, too late at night to make myself hungry. :p

Blimey, this thread is as busy as my veg bed! :D

I've been busy in the garden most of this week. My raised bed looks fit to burst. I've made the same mistake as last year, and planted too much, too close I reckon. My calibrese is practically taking over, it's like a triffid. The radishes are just about done now, and may plant more for a few weeks time. I've found a few have a small white worm in them, and have had to bin those. Any ideas what these worms are? Are they simply roundworm? I've never seen them in the soil before, and they creep me out a bit & I've been manically scrubbing my hands/nails clean after gardening.

I've also found tomato seedlings growing in the soil base of my greenhouse, which was sited earlier this year over the spot my old raised bed was on last year. I've potted them now and they seem to be growing nicely, so we'll see if they produce anything in the late summer. All my other larger tomato plants are now either producing fruit, or in flower. Funnily enough, the plant in the hanging basket has produced fruit 1st.

My cucumber plants, although not really growing particularly large, have begun to flower.

I have 5 tubs of potatoes all growing, and at several different stages (planted over a period of weeks apart). The larger ones are just about to flower, so it won't be long now before we have our 1st harvest.

The carrots have big bushy tops, and the base of the stalk is starting to thicken, which is promising. I wish I could say the same for my garlic, and onions (spring & red variety). They have the green stalks on top, but nothing looks to be happening at the base of them, and definitely no sign of an onion or garlic bulb forming. How many weeks does it take for them to mature?

Talking of planning ahead, I have already stocked up on seeds for next year. I noticed B&Q had a big new stock of them, so took advantage of some of their value packs at 39p each. Some for veggies, and others for flowers & bedding.

I'm now very achy after helping my OH put up some fencing and gates. Here's some pictures of the fruits & veg of my labours:

    DSC01006.jpg Potatoes, Radish, spring onions
DSC01008-1.jpg Cucumbers & chilli to the far left
DSC01000.jpg Too much! tomato, strawberries, lettuce, garlic, onions, celery
DSC01004.jpg beet leaf chard, red onions, carrots

One day the clocks will stop, and time won't mean a thing

Wow sarymaclary - that all looks fab! How lucky for you that those tomatoes popped up, they are looking good :D

I've got to sow some more salad leaves cos we're getting through them at a rate of knots, also more radish, carrots and spring onion but the weather today is very showery, windy and cold and not sure if I feel up to braving the elements - it's June for heavens sake!

Got my Gardeners World mag delivered this morning so may just curl up with that :D

Oh yeah, recieved the lemon and orange trees that I ordered a couple of weeks ago from T&M, they are small but look very healthy :j. Now just got to read up on what to do with them so maybe it will be out in the garden for me after all.

    Happy growing all :D
  • Quick question... My toms have had flowers for ages, and a few flower heads have fallen off after going brown but still no sign of fruit at all. IS that usual or is it time to start dusting them with a little brush like the Pollination Fairy? :P

Also... My teeny pumpkin is about the size of a large marble and it has the most massive flower! Seriously must be 6 inches across lol I guess it's pretty much like a courgette flower but none of those are out yet so I'm just happy something is doing something in the garden lol

My toms are the same...loads of flowers still. Maybe time for the old paintbrush? I did the same with my courges yesterday as the flowers do not stay open for very long at all!!

    Progress....

Tomato tumbler, loads of trusses and flowers.
Tomato gardeners delight are growing quite upright, I'm hoping they will bush out a bit as want them to grow as bushes ideally.
Courgettes - lots of plants in pots and plenty of flowers. Although I am still useless at ID'ing the M and F flowers they all look male too me!
Raspberry in large pot is massive and is fruiting - have found some wild brambles at the back of the garden with fruits on also, delighted!!
Chilli and bell pepper plant now has small flower buds :D
Strawberries good but on one plant they seem very deformed, will wait and see how that pans out,
Salad leaves and spinach are unstoppable. Quite why I've not been growing these before this year is beyond me, so easy!
French beans all doing well and growing quickly. Have positioned on an old trellis to save buying canes...

Don't think I've missed anything out but I probably have!
Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!

Just popped in to rest my feet. Been potting up today, and having a look round to see what I can harvest next week. Weather is still lovely and sunny here and has been great all week. Fingers crossed it stays that way (though the farmers round here are moaning that they need rain :). First pak choi harvested yetsterday, and first flowers opened on some of the aubergines in the greenhouse today.

heynonnynonny & soullesfire - have beeen pollinating our tomatoes since the first flowers opened and there are lots of baby toms. Maybe it's time to get your paintbrushes out?

sarymclary – don’t worry, it’s the larva of carrot root fly and won’t do you any harm (not good for the radishes though)

I've been giving my toms a bit of a shake too, but I might get some paintbrushes out of poundland.

Been concentrating on the front garden today, extending the border, weeding the monoblock etc. I'm done now, it's so hot working in the sun here. Came in to get a drink and inhaled half a pack of jaffa cakes, oops.

I think I need to feed my strawberries more, I've forgotten a few times and I've got some real tiddlers.

sarymclary - everything looks really good. :)
