My french beans are doing absolutely nothing at all
They're just about showing second set of leaves but that's it. no sign of climbing at all never mind harvest.
Just kindof waiting on stuff now. Not harvested anything but peashoots, salad and radishes. Feeling slightly disheartened that I'm not up to my eyeballs in lovely food, but I guess that's still to come. Just seems an awful long time since sowing in late march/early april.0 -

Just popping out of lurkdome to say we are just the same here, the only thing we have harvested is lettuce and about 4 strawberries.
Everything we are growing is way behind except for the broad beans which will be ready in a couple of weeks and the raspberries which seem fine. My sweetcorn is about 8 in high and the courgettes and french beans are at about the 4 leaf stage.
Perhaps it's a Yorkshire thing - lots of our seedlings didn't get going at all this year.0 -

I've been feeling a bit down about my plants but today I gave away some excess alpine strawberries on freecycle and had several comments on how well they were doing. Like JayJay I have harvested about 4 strawberries (and they're alpine ones!). I have lots of flowers and a few green ones on the normal strawbs though. A few buds on the chillies and some flowers on the tomatoes (given to me by friends), the french beans are growing but nowhere near flowers though and the blueberries have masses of green berries
Plenty of time yet though so don't be downhearted soulless:D

Just planning ahead a bit.
I have to grow my veggies in containers and I'm a bit limited for space, so I prefer things that will keep going for ages rather than just giving one crop. (Other than my new potatos obviously.)
I've got courgettes, garlic, mange tout, kale, spinach and salad leaves going at the mo. Don't like beans or tomatos. I'm just wondering when I do take the potatos out what I can put in the pots instead that it's not too late to start from seed now to crop later in the year.
All suggestions gratefully received. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

:j:j:jwoo hoo I HAVE BABY BEANS :j:j:j
Sorry just had to shout that. I was checking my french beans today and spotted diddly little baby beans. Must be about 10 of them at the moment. I can't wait to go out and check for more in the next few days.
Also I was having a close look at the courgettes that are in the middle of my beans. I definatley have at least one female bud, so can't wait for that one to flower and join the males. I couldn't believe the stems on one of the plants. One stem alone is almost 3 feet long and about and inch and a half think. These ones sharing the pots with the beans are about 3 times as big as the ones in the beds now. The sun today and yesturday has jump started everything again after a week full of rain.
My toms still have purple blotches on their leaves. I have given them a feed so hopefully it was the potassium thing. I will have to wait and see with them. I've also worked out what the purple splashes on my toms are. It looks like paint drips - its bird poo from all the berries they've been eating :rotfl:0 -
Hello all
hope you are well. I late sewed some french beans and there are no sign of them yet but they will come up I'm sure. I'm awful though...went for a wander round local shops and went into B and M and got a ANOTHER raspberry (autumn fruiting) I have four now...and a tayberry bush. Then went to Morissons and got some strawberry plants, an aubretia, some other little plug plants and some new tomatoes!
THEN went to the florist and got some pansy type flowers which are really pretty! I really must stop! Still.... there are so many nice things out at the minute!
I will need some more compost this week! Going to sort out my Kale etc this week so will need it! Still everything is growing all be it a bit slowly in some cases. Still I have flowers on my tomatoes so am feeding them now
I may get a few more pin wheel flowers as they are beautiful! Hope to start harvesting some fruit soon
Enjoy the evening!Feb GC: £200 Spent: £190.790 -
I'm sorry - I have not had time to read all the way through, but have a quick question: I am growing 3 sorts of early spuds in bags on my terrace and they love it. I have done as I was told, and earthed up, watered and put them in a sunny place and the greenery is very high and healthy-looking. But I've now lost the instructions - please can someone tell me when I can harvest them. I think my original instructions said wait till the flowers die (there aren't any yet) but then I read an article by Hugh F-W in which he said 'cut the flowers off before they flower properly' so now I'm very confused......
PS last year I got a grobag, made a cut half way round its middle and stood the two halves upright (one in a big pot to keep it stable) and I grew two climbing french beans in the two halves. There are only two of us and they whizzed away and gave us a lot of beans over quite a few weeks, Will do that agin this year as it took up no space (or time) and was a cheap way to do it.0 -
I think my plants are taking a massive battering, there's been torrential non stop rain for nearly 2 hours now and I can't get out to rescue them, I keep seeing lightning every so often too. Was hoping to have got a bit done today but there's no chance!! On a good note I have seen my first ever courgette flower, lovely big yellow flower, very pleased. Gave OH's mum a tomato and courgette plant yesterday she was over the moon.Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!0

Anyone growing peas?? I was in my local garden centre and they had some decidedly droopy looking peas for 10P a tray. I got 2 trays. I have given them a water and they look better already. I also picked up 3 sun gold tomato plants for 5p each too.
Anyone grown either peas or sun gold tomatos??MF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/20000
