Anyone growing peas?? I was in my local garden centre and they had some decidedly droopy looking peas for 10P a tray. I got 2 trays. I have given them a water and they look better already. I also picked up 3 sun gold tomato plants for 5p each too.

Anyone grown either peas or sun gold tomatos??

First timer growing peas.. I've sown some and bought a pot from a nursery.. they all seem to be doing rather well indeed, had 4-5 that I have left over in pot, and forgot about them pretty much, they are trailing over side of pot and have pods on... excitables

Well, today I finally managed to finish my raised bed (60cm tall!!) and have the stuff to do another too.. Have planted some more runner beans, french beans, broad beans and peas, and am deciding on what else to put in :)

Everything is looking good in garden. I have stuff in pots, in neighbours top of garden and now my lovely raised bed.

Quick question.. am I right in thinking that I can feed beans tomato food?

Morganlefay, I am not sure if this is of any help to you but here goes:

This is my first year of growing spuds ever and I am growing three batches in bags. I planted the rocket variety (I think) and it is now many weeks past when they should have been ready but I was not sure what to do as I too was waiting for flowers.

I have had no flowers, not that great foliage and one batch had most of the foliage stripped by slugs. The plants looked like they were not far off dying this weekend so I thought I had better try now otherwise I might get no crop. My concern has always been that I would get no crop.

So I stuck my hand in to check to see if I could find any spuds. Had real problems finding any, had to take half the soil out and have another go. And... I have masses of slightly over sized spuds. I was so excited! I never had any flowers. Not sure if this is the variety though.

PS I hate potatoes and can't eat anything with them in! - they are just for OH

I think my plants are taking a massive battering, there's been torrential non stop rain for nearly 2 hours now and I can't get out to rescue them, I keep seeing lightning every so often too. Was hoping to have got a bit done today but there's no chance!! On a good note I have seen my first ever courgette flower, lovely big yellow flower, very pleased. Gave OH's mum a tomato and courgette plant yesterday she was over the moon.

What horrible weather! Been raining off and on here, but nowhere near as bad as that. Hope your plants are okay.

Congrats on the flower. My broad beans (which are still in 6" pots), have started flowering! Just as well they're dwarf, I'll hopefully get them repotted tomorrow. It's always exciting isn't it?

Chimera, your bed sounds fab. I've been wondering if I can get a raised bed anywhere...

My potatoes which were earthed up on Tuesday have shot up again. Foliage has reached the top of the bag. :T

    Rain rain rain today.
We did manage to concrete in a post in the garden to make another trelis before the downpour started. I hope I get more time in there tomorrow as I have a load of leeks to plant out and plenty of flowers are ready to go in the beds.
I think I read somewhere on here about if you accidently cut the top off a bean runner. Was it on here? Anyway don't worry if this happens as it should send of a second one. Mine keep producing sister runners, I have about 6 or 7 coming off each plant now. It's not effecting the plants as they have plenty of flowers and (as I said earlier) baby beans.
Also tomato food is fine for pretty much everything. This, along with the blood, fish and bone food is all I'm using in the garden.

Hello all :) I must earth up my spuds on Tuesday....tomorrow is another hospital day! But everything is going mental. I hope it all goes ok..... I grow peas and they seem to have done ok. I stuck them in when they were little and added canes straight away. They climbed up them and then you pick them. You need to keep picking them to keep them growing, but mine seem to be slowing now so may have to go to make room for something else..... no room for slow growers! Next year going to stick to mange tout and beans though! Much more yield from them!

This weather is bonkers but at least my plants are getting a good soaking! Hope it brightens up tomorrow for them!

Have a good day all :)

just a short shower this afternoon and otherwise it's been quite nice here today, mostly warm and overcast. So sorry to hear about the downpours. Fingers crossed for all your plants heynonnynonny.

Got loads of potting up done, and potted up a few *confession time* new plants bought in garden centres yesterday *cough*:o:

a grape vine (I have absolutely no idea what to do with it! Do I have to prune?? I've just potted it up and tied it into a cane for now)

a blackcurrant bush and a gooseberry bush (both quite small and have baby fruits on, just couldn't resist!) again, just potted them both up into bigger pots for now

some bedding plants (oh, the shame :o)

On the more economical front, potted up another batch of lettuce seedlings into window boxes that were emptied this week, potted up kiwi fruit into a bigger pot and added a hooped bamboo cane to tie in any sideshoots (there aren't any yet, but I'm ever hopeful)

Have decided to water my toms with half-strength tomato food from now on; they're showing signs of magnesium deficiency and need more feed.

Great to hear about the baby beans and courgettes coming on peoples plants. Just the one baby bean here so far, but I did notice two female buds on the courgettes :T - loads of baby green toms coming, but still just buds on the peppers & aubergines. Have also moved a lot of herb plants outside to harden off before planting out (I have them under netting for a bit of protection as a halfway house). A busy couple of days. Feet are killing me, but have a warm glow on my face :)

Hi all - sounds like everyone's doing well :D

Everything here is going extremely well, especially tomatoes. I can't believe how worried I was about them a couple of months ago when they seemed to be dying off. All of them (Gardeners delights & Mini Bels) are looking so strong and healthy and have lots of flowers on them. Lots of pea pods growing and still a lot of flowers. Potatoes are still triffid like, they must be about 4 feet tall now and I can see flower buds on them but no flowers as yet. Courgettes have a couple of gorgeous flowers on them and my cucumbers also have a number of flowers and finally I think a couple of them are female :j

Still harvesting loads of salad leaves and radishes, some baby spinach and baby beetroot leaves. Lots of flowers and flower buds on peppers and chillis, spring onions seem to be thickening up as do onions. Carrots growing very well and I sow more every couple of weeks. Rocket has gone to seed pretty much so must sow some more.

A couple of worries/queries: I planted my garlic last November and they have grown really well, a couple of plants seem to have leaves going brown but no signs of any flowers? Anyone know if I should just leave them be for a while?

Also I got two very small blueberry bushes and planted them both in fairly large pots on the patio. One of them is growing really well but the other one isn't doing very well although it did seem to be but after last weeks downpours the ericacious (sp?) compost seems to be absolutely sodden (in both pots) even though the last few days have been dry with some sunny spells. It's now pouring with rain again, although has been dry all day. I must admit I have forgotten to feed them (have special ericacious feed) for the last 2 weeks - anyone got any ideas how I can perk the poorly one up please?

On another point which is nothing to do with veg growing - I got one of those peony trees from garden bargains (the T&M one) and although it had lots of shoots on it when I planted it, it didn't seem to do anything for a while. I went out in the garden yesterday morning and there were absolutely lots of tiny leaves coming from the shoots :j

    Happy growing folks :D

BTW: after sending off for the citrus trees I haven't succumbed to anything else :rotfl:

Hi really sorry to hear about all the weather, we have had some rail here and have to keep going out to my plastic greenhouse to drain the rain off the plastic cover incase it rips it.

Wondered if anyone could help me, lots of my dwarf french beans are now harvesting size, but for a while have turned a dark brown/black colour over most of the bean. I have tried googling for an answer, only found one mention of it where someone thought it could be wind burn? Has anyone else had this happen to their beans? I hope it doesn't effect the taste as I want to eat them for dinner tonight!
