Morning all. I've just done some seed shopping, not really naughty as I haven't really had to buy many. I saw these and thought I'd give them a go. Has anyone grown these?

Hello Veggies! I have a question about pots for tomatoes, my tomatoes are only in small pots at the moment and I desperately need to plant them on to their final home, but what size pot is best? People have mentioned Morrissons flower buckets before but I haven't had a chance to go there yet to get any, would these be an ok size for 1 plant? And do you just support them with a garden cane and tie them to it loosely? My uncle grows 3 to a growbag that he turns on to its side, but I'm running out of space in mums garden and figure I can fit more pots in the area left than growbags :-) Oh and do you need to net tomatoes from birds etc? Birds nicked loads of my juicy strawbs the other day as I hadn't netted them and don't want that to happen to my toms when they appear!0

Mine are now repotted in 30 cm tall pots with a cane to support, tied to allow a little growth on the stem. As they continue to grow the tie will be moved up the cane! Have never put nets over tomatoes before.0

kimmee - I don't know but maybe you should pick the male flowers off just in case? Don't worry, you will get some female flowers.
credit card - we got tempted by the T&M RHS offer a couple of weeks ago and am trying to wait for the gift vouchers before ordering from their seed saleGet thee behind me ausmummy! :rotfl:
glitterati - yes, the big Morrison's flower buckets would be about the smallest size you could get away with for a tomato plant (just the one in each pot). I don't know about birds, but our hens love tomatoes given half a chance so you might need to net them (maybe someone else could tell you better).
P.S. Has been raining all morning but I think it's starting to brighten up now. Got some flower seeds sown yesterday and got some short canes for the peppers. They have little buds on, is it too late to pot them up again do you think?0 -
Wow, what a hive of activity this thread has been recently! Hope you are having a better day today janibrown - you know where we are if you need to talk... :grouphug:
Well my tomato plants that I had grown from seed, well and truely died! So I had to buy one yesterday - a money maker variety one, which hopefully I'll have a bit more luck with! Potatoes are doing well as are strawberries, but no flowers on either yet. Have recently planted some peas and a couple of radishes just to see how I get on too. Carrots and salad leaves appear to be doing well too, so am mainly watching and waiting! Also had a composter delivered yesterday so will be starting to fill that soon!
Having read through some recently posts though, my attention was captured by the citrus trees posts and I went in search of the link - have now got two citrus trees and 1 apple tree in my virtual basket! Thought this was supposed to be a moneysaving site! :cool:0 -
All this rain has been doing the world of good, got my first flowers on the potatoes, and the squash have also started to flower and are growing like mad over the pagoda, more pics to follow.
Today though I have cropped the first TONDO spherical courgette- how fun!

Just spent a couple of hours in the drizzel doing some weeding and planting out. I managed to get most of my pumpkins and squashes out into the flower bed. Only one problem, somewhere along the way I have mixed them up, so it will be a suprise to see which is which. They all have lots od flower buds, some even have tiny pumpkins forming.
I had some suprise visitors today around lunch time. I loved being able to go out and pick some salad leaves for in the sandwiches, I even had some home made bread rolls to go with it.
everything else is going well, I have just binned 2 tomato plants though. The stems and some of the leaves had brown soggy patches and as i wasnt sure what it was i just got rid, I dont want to risk the rest of my crops getting blight.
I really want to get back out there as DS is napping, but its raining too much right now.
One other thing, I have lost 2 stone so far this year. only a very small change in diet but I an getting more exercise as I try to get out in the garden every day plus I take DS to the locak park daily and walk for about 40 mins-1hour.
Well done every one, i think all us newbies are doing pretty well this year. We will have to start getting some pictures of our harvests soon!DFW NERD NO.656 DEBT FREE 24TH NOVEMBER 2010 TOTAL DEBT AUGUST 2007 £39000MFiT T2 NO.56 WE OWN [STRIKE]25%[/STRIKE] 31.5% OF OUR HOUSE SO FAR!0 -

Horrible weather here this morning, wet and very windy, but it's supposed to dry out this afternoon. I hope so because my potatoes need earthed up.
Have you invested in anything whilst you were at a loose end this morning?
I do hope it clears a little bit, got plenty of french beans needing repotting and no undercover space to do it in, I may have to have soil and plants all over the conservatory again!!Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!0 -
oh my word, my tumbling toms in hanging basket have gone mad!!!!!!
I planted two in a 35 cm basket, now thinking maybe one will be enough.. any advice gratefully received?0
