May I just ask - has anyone seen for sale those thick plastic big bucket trugs with the handles either side for a good price - am thinking my courgettes are going to need them and possibly my raspberry which seems to be growing loads.

Asda have them too. Small ones are £2 and large ones are £3. Can't remember the size in litres!

I've just checked the weather for tonight and it's supposed to go down to -2! I got my greenhouse back out yesterday and I've got most of my plugs and my strawberries in there, might cover the plugs with the poundland fleece just to be on the safe side.

I hadn't thought of planting things in my trugs, (been using them for ferrying garden waste to the bin) but I really fancy planting some lettuces. Anyone recommend a good variety? I probably only want a bog standard lettuce lol.
 Mummy to an amazing little girl
  • Yes! I got 2 of them from Asda - presumably the bigger ones for £3 each and have some potatoes coming on nicely now.

I have the salad leaves on the go from BBC Dig In seeds now as it appears the lettuce were getting chewed - no trace of slugs either, but someone suggested birds may be responsible???

Just bought myself a garden fork for £5.99 from Aldi and also a large green plastic tubtrug (like what we were talking about earlier) for £2.99 from the same store. Well chuffed.

My seed potatoes, growing bag and 5 packs of free seeds arrived from T&M today, they were a freebie I had ordered from a mag way back in Feb and had totally forgotten about them :j

So i've stuck the potatoes on the windowsill to chit for a bit although they do have some eyes already, when can I plant them in the bags? They are first earlies so I am guessing soonish.

I also unearthed a heated propogator from the shed which I bought 2 years ago and thought my hubby got rid when we moved so I am dead chuffed :D, so this afternoon I am going to sow my toms, miribel and Gardeners delight, some peppers and marigolds for companion planting into the heated propogator.

I have also run out of containers and need some more so I think a visit to Wilkos/poundland might be in order.

For watering I found these on amazon, I have a few for hanging baskets etc and find they keep them watered well for 2 weeks and they look pretty so are perfect if you are going away.

You can also get watering spikes which you stick onto a bottle which do the same job but just don't look as nice.

hi Lynz, I'm not sure whether this will be any help but today I was in Ald! and they were selling pots which have a system already built in which means you only have to water them once a week. I was looking at them but i'm not 100% whether they will be deep enough ....

    Hello,

Is it too late to join in the veggie fun? We've recently moved to a new house - which has a garden!! It's my first ever garden so I'm really excited (and also know nothing - not a good mix).

Anyway, we're currently digging through the soil (horrible clay/stone stuff) with the intention of creating a veggie patch. I've got seeds from the BBC Dig In giveaway as well as some herbs we transported from the windowsills of the old flat.

I hope we're not leaving it too late to get started, but I figure that sunny days have to give me a better chance of doing anything in the garden at all!

    Regards,

    Youthworker's Wife

    Never too late!
I am in a flat at the moment with no garden or balcony, moving into a new build next week or two :) Also our first ever house with a garden!!

So far i have chives, basil, oregane growing, moneymaker tomatos, and salad leaves.
I have a plastic greenhouse ready for when we move and then we shall get cracking too.

April onwards is the best time to get started so good luck with your growing! If you look on the opack of seeds it will tell you when best to sow/harvest a majority of mine seem to be April-June for sowing.

Hi guys, I think growing in the trugs is a great idea, I can go Asda, Home Bargains or Aldi and grab a trug or ten. I wish I'd got some for my strawberry plants, my plastic one is lined with rubble for drainage and is very heavy to bring in and out every day to harden them off - it ripped a little this morning

I signed up for some free RHS seeds (some pledge thingy) and found the seeds I had sent to me the other day (had forgot all about them) - I was researching toms in hanging baskets and found a variety called Gardeners delight was supposed to be good for hanging...was going to buy some plants off eBay but then found these RHS seeds are Gardeners delight toms so decided to try from seed. Clingfilmed the pots and have my fingers crossed for them!!

I er, pulled off the flowers on my brand new strawberry plant because I don't know what 'pinching out' is :o hope I did good :o.

AND I found some random rhubarb in the corner of my front gravel garden...at least I think it is...pinky green with what looks like a crown of sorts on top. Just wish I liked the stuff!
Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!

Not an expert by any means but I think you can plant potatoes even if they haven't been chitted so you may want to plant them very soon. Sure someone more expert than me will advise.

I'm also growing minibel & gardeners delight - they are doing brilliantly (I'm going to be overrun with tomatoes this year :j) so good luck with yours :D

Got myself a lovely gooseberry bush today, a pot of autumn bliss raspbery canes - which have started sprouting and some peas..

Question: I completely forgot to ask about the peas.. in a pot there must be at least 10 seedlings. Are they ok to go out now? I want to put in pots, maybe some in ground if garden ready on time, how many to a pot?

Sounds like you all have your little plants under control! Not sure how long I'll have to wait before I can tell if mine are any good...

Can anyone suggest any other plants for me to have a go at?

I can only grow these in the greenhouse really, no space in the garden!
