I just had a little plant pot ( about the size of a coffee mug) stuffed with cotton wool, layer of seeds, water on- job done.
Thank you!
I was finding it hard to believe it would work - amazing!

Hey y'all. I bought some strawberry plants from B&Q and my OH spent a fortune on a strawberry planter from Homebase as a present (he's not very MSE). I put them outside this morning, but do I need to bring them in at night? I was thinking that I would try to at least until the end of April.
On other topics, just one of three courgette seeds has germinated so far, but 5 salad leaves have and tomatoes, chillis and peppers are all growing well on the window sill. Also planted some carrots and cucumbers over the weekend, so am all excited about getting home to check on them!:A If saving money is wrong, I don't want to be right. William Shatner

Finally planted something!
Been lurking for a while and my long overdue debut was the planting of some lettuce in a wee tray. Feels suprisingly satisfying.
Thanks for all the inspiration guys!0 -
Hey, have been reading all of ur posts and i am attempting for the first time since leaving home to grow my own veggies. last saturday i planted cherry tomatoes moneymaker tomatos sweetcorn cabbage carrot spring red onions aubergines courgettes beetroot peppers and hot peppers, at the moment i have seedlings of cabbage and beetroot sweetcorn and courgettes and one aubergine, none of my toms have done anything yet- they are my fave
hope to hear more stories sucesses and ideas and tips
thanks
and potatoes!0 -
For potatoes, I was in Homebase the weekend before last, and they had sold out of growing bags, but the helpful lady in the shop just said to use refuse sacks and pierce them with a knife. Not the most amazingly beautiful thing, but seems effective.
On a different note, I planted carrot seeds in trays three weeks ago and the seedlings are now about 5-6cm tall - is now a good time to plant them out? Don't want to sentence the poor wee critters to an early grave...0 -

I wouldn't worry about tomatoes just yet. Mine took two weeks to start showing. I was on the verge of throwing them out and starting again before they finally popped through.:A If saving money is wrong, I don't want to be right. William Shatner

Harden off your strawberries; leave them outside during the daytime and bring them back in overnight for about a week. Then leave them outside from then on. Strawberries are pretty hardy, mine were outside all winter (without any special coddling) and some of them have already flowered :T0 -

Even cheaper, just use the bags the compost comes in (as long as it's thick enough to stop light).
Carrots should be sown where they are too grow as they have a long tap root so you may have stunted the roots already (they grow much more root before foliage). Try transplanting a few to see but I would resow them direct. Give a bit of protection when sowing them.0 -

What are you growing, if you look back through the thread you should see plenty of advice on containers as this one was the 1st:
What are you intending to grow..... Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0
