Thanks Heynonnynonny, i'm growing sweetcorn from seed (they're about 1-2 inches tall) and thought i'd have to plant them in the ground, i'm really pleased now that i can put them into large pots.

I've potted up 6 types of herbs plugs i got from morrisons for £2 today, hope they do ok
  • Good luck with them, it has to be worth a try surely. I think when they get bigger will split over 2 big pots.

I saw those £2 herb plugs they are great value. My herbs from seeds are doing poorly so well worth getting those. Still on the lookout for the 8 for 99p flower pots in M's!!

I grew sweetcorn is a raised bed last year, it is sitting on concrete so is almost like a 6" deep container.

They grew great and tasted loverrrrly, but the plants are very top heavy (mine were 5 foot tall) and need support to stop the wind blowing them over.

I went to a garden centre today and was hunting for cucumber seeds - I think the Alys Fowler effect is well and truly with us as I got the last packet of 'Burpless (:rotfl:) Tasty Green' F1 Hybrid. Both of the other types of cucumbers had sold out.

I'm going to grow them in pots & I'm guessing from seeing the Edible Gardener that I'm going to need something for them to grow up. Anyone got any ideas please? I guess I could rig up some kind of netting behind the pots.

Great idea about the pots in grow bags seraphina - I saw some on a website and I think that 3 of the growbag pots were about £15 - your idea is much more MSE!

Looks like everyone has had a great veg growing weekend :j
  • So yours were 6 inches deep, that's good to know thanks, there is hope for me yet!

What do you reckon about spacing, would a couple per 30cm container be ok?

  • Hi everyone!

My toms and peppers are doing really well. I haven been hardening them off all week in their 9" pots - my kitchen is like a jungle at night! I sowed some parsnips and french beans outside today along with a few onion sets and some leek. I have been watching gardeners world and sowing parsnips was their thing to do this week so I am pleased with that!

One question though - how much do you stick to the planting guide? Like I raised my peas indoors then when i took them out it said something stupid like plant them 5 million inches apart when in order to do that I would only get 2 rows in my raised bed. So I ignored it and planted em 6 inches apart. Will I come a cropper??

I sow my peas about 2 inches apart, so I think you should be alright.

What a relief - my tomatoes are poking through the soil at last.:j

Can't believe how excited/relieved I was.:o Everything else doing really well so I can breathe a sigh of relief. Potted on my Aubergines, peppers, chillies and mini peppers into bigger pots and they look a lot happier. Got the grass cut again, been up to the allotment and so everything good here.;)

I see the April thread did not return after it was spammed.

ANYWAY...this morning i got 1000 organic cress seeds through, now do i use a thin layer of soil or damp cotton wool/paper towel as stated?

Also what pot/container? I have a old tin foil pie tray i was hoping to use (with drainage holes) but would this be ok?

I am a complete novice and really have no clue LOL!

I just had a little plant pot ( about the size of a coffee mug) stuffed with cotton wool, layer of seeds, water on- job done.
