My MIL once told us that if she won the lottery she would by us all houses on a cul de sac so we could all live next door to each other.

I choked and said Id rather kill myself!

In the next town is too close for comfort for me :D
  • I would have said yes, but OH and I bought a house within stones throw distance of his mothers house, his grandmother also lives in that street, and his other grandmorter lives another streeet further

I did worry that they would alwyas be round annoying me but they arent

They do annoy me though when the whinge saying they havent seen us for like a fortnight cos they are of the generation where they go to town on a saurday then when they get home they visit both their mothers every week

Ive already said as has OH thre is no way we are going to get stuck into any routine doing that, I cant think of anything worse than having to go see the parents every week

And also my mother is now selling her house and hoping to move close to me (she lives 20 mins drive away and neither of us drive lol) as she has no one left in the town we lived in since I moved away (my brother moved away in 2006)

One of my friend's parents moved just around the corner from her and her husband. They have found it very useful as her parents get older. Except when her parents need help, I would say they def don't live in one another's pockets.
  • Wouldnt mind my inlaws being close by its the sil i wouldnt want living too close i would never get rid of her :-)

round the corner is fine, but if I sit in the garden I could do an underarm throw of a stone into their garden

My Mum was looking for a new house, mentioned how lovely our village was and about how she wanted somewhere like this to live, my eyes grew as big as saucers and I think I stuttered something unintelligible.

But she wouldn't want to live next to me either. My IL's would, but I would tell them straight out that if they bought that house, mine would go on the market the next day. In fact I think I may have told them that before anyway :D
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.
  • I hate it with a passion and that goes for my mom moving too close too!!

I don't find it weird but then I come from a farming background where when you get married its often assumed that one set of parents lives in a bungalow on the farm or some such

My MIL lives a few doors away - so no it is not unusual for me!

She is elderly and widowed and needs people on hand to help her out -for us it works well. It is far easier than having to travel every weekend to sort out the things she needs.

You have to have rules and boundaries - I have keys to her house but would never let myself in unless I thought she was in difficulty. She comes for dinner on some evenings - but only by invitation.

We have found it works quite well - but it depends on your circumstances I suppose.
