my idea of hell! My IL's are lovely but from a distance. MIL would let herself in and start bl00dy cooking and stuff

Quite funny thing happened a while back. FIL said 'If I won the lotto I'd buy a big mansion and we can all live there', not known for my tact I replied 'I don't think so!' Oops :o

It's made even funnier because a few weeks before that MIL was moaning that her IL's wanted to buy the bungalow next door for MIL & FIL to live in and she was mortified and said she didn't want to live that close to her IL's.

I politely reminded them of this when they got funny about my comment :p
A very busy Yummy Mummy to a 1 year old gorgeous boy :smileyhea

Where does the time go?
  • God I couldn't do that. With my Ex bf his mum lived just round the corner and would let herself in when she wanted!!! Even when we were in the mood so to speak....

I would be really happy for this to happen. My ILs are great. I never let anyone have a key to our house, not even my own mum, but to have them on hand for babysitting would be great. As long as you respect boundaries, and don't just barge into someone's home, I think it can work. Haven't actually got a baby yet (am pregnant though!) but I think his mum would be great for helping with a newborn, and it's nice for children to be able to pop over to granny's for tea now and then.
  • I didnt think it would be odd as my grandparents always lived on the same street as us when i was younger ,but when i met my dh he lived right next door to his parents and they used to pop in and out of the back door all the time and i drove me mad his grandparents also lived in the same street and did the same as well ,
His grandfather used to take the dog out for a walk every night at ten and then come in ours for a cuppa .
I never felt as though i could be comfy i used to go for a shower at night come out and instead of putting on my pj's i used to get redressed in the bathroom .
It all stopped when i accidentally on purpose broke the key in the door and had to break the door down to get in .
The replacement door was a pvc one with a slam lock so no one could come in without a key 8 yrs on grandparents still live in the same street but they knock the door to get in now

Ok, my mother in law lives over a 1000 miles away, and if she decided to move any closer, I would go mad. And probably change the continent!

I thought my mum's family were bad enough:
Us, her sister and their parents all live on the same street. It does come in useful though.

  • My ILs are lovely but I would hate to have them across the road :)
  • Yes, it would feel a little bit "odd" if it was my MIL but I'd be very happy if it was my mom. (It would actually be nice if both of them lived a bit nearer to me - it's just that it's only natural to prefer your own mom over someone else's mom.)
