no no no!! If you mean the skins are tough, steam them and then pod them so you've just got the lovely tender inside bit, which you can then serve as a veggie, put in a stew, add to your pasta sauce or whatever. it is a bit of a faff but better than chucking them. honest.

    Ooh, I'll try that, thanks.

I always steam and peel them. I just steam (or sometimes quickly boil them) in a sieve over a pan of boiling water (normally with pasta or potatoes cooking in it) and a lid on. Then I dunk them in a big bowl of cold water so they're cool enough to handle and I pretty much just squeeze the beans out of the pods.

I have a couple of recipes where the beans are pureed but they both call for them to be shelled first. They're both Sophie Grigson recipes. One is for a broad bean puree as a suggested accompaniment to baked mushrooms. In that the shelled broad beans are basically processed with about 1/4 their weight of mascarpone and seaoned with lemon juice pepper and thyme. The other is Iced Broad Bean, Mint and Yoghurt Soup. In this the cooked and shelled broad beans are liquidised with chicken or vegetable stock, lots of greek yoghurt and some chopped spring onions and mint. Not the soup for current weather conditions though.

I've just thrown them into the SC, frozen, with whatever I've been cooking, and they work out fine

  • Hi all
I'm new here, but here's what I sometimes do with broad beans (tho if the OP doesn't like them on their own, it may not be that much use):
Microwave gently to heat without becoming rubbery, add splash of olive oil and a squirt of lemon juice, grate over some parmesan (good use for a scrag end) and a twist of black pepper - yum!! This was virtually the only good thing I found to do with frozen broad beans (they are tough and not a patch on fresh) and I quite often eat it as a snack, rather than as a side dish...

  • I buy mine from Waitrose. Pricier than most, and not a jot on homegrown, but the best frozen I have found. My fa,ily likes W's mixed bean mix. I know, not frugal but when you have dodgy wrists it's better than nothing!

I've got some broad beans that really need eating today. I've looked on the net and can only find salads! I'm sick to death of cold salads this week and looking for something hot. Can anyone recommend a recipe? Thanks.

I love broad beans just lightly steamed. But I'm the only one in my house who does! So to help the others eat them I mix them with grilled bacon bits and smother in cheese sauce. Even ds2 will eat them this way!

Just got a recipe with my veg box:

    Broad bean pate

Fry a chopped onion in olive oil til soft, add 8 oz broad beans (shelled), Juice of one orange, rind of 1 orange and 6 tbsp water.
Cover and simmer gently for 20 mins until beans are tender. Transfer to a blender and add 4 tbsp yoghurt and some fresh mint and process til smooth. Chill before eating.

Haven't tried it yet, but will as I don't really like em just boiled
Just call me Nodwah the thread killer
