Broad Beans

Bleahhhh - just got a whole lot of them in my veggie box this week!!!

What can I do with them to make them taste vaguely better than they do ususally - I hate them - can i soup them or throw them in some kind of sauce - do I peel them or what?

I've never cooked them before as I've never bought them - mum always tried to force them down me but they still eneded up on the side of my plate

  • Delia does a great broad bean salad, you pod and cook the beans and pop them out of their skins, fiddly but well worth it, cook some bacon so its crispy and crumble over the beans then add a garlic vinegrette. tastes great and lasts a couple of days. I hated broad beans untill I took the skins off the actual bean. They come out in two halves and are a really pretty bright green not grey and mannky as I remember as a kid.

    Hi elisebutt65
I had them in my veggie box for the first time a couple of weeks ago & one of the things I did with them was to make a sort of houmous dip/spread. I liked it a lot.
I like them in salads & also use them as a vegetable mixed up with peas & sweetcorn.

Young broad beans taste very different to old, mature ones which are usually for sale in shops.

I bought some in Asda this week. On the label it says to pod them, boil then toss in some butter and fresh parsley.

If you are a broad bean hater, the thing to do is pod them, cook them very briefly in boiling water and then slit the greyish green skins and pop out the bright green bean.It is quite quick and my kids eat them without complaints.

They are delicious in salads.Try feta cheese, new potatoes and broad beans with some olive oil and mint.

Another thing you can do is to puree them with olive oil, garlic and some parmesan cheese to make a hummus-like dip.

Yep, much better out of the skin. I loathed broad beans as a kid, but a few years back we went to a country B&B and they served skinned steamed broad beans straight out of their garden; they were fabulous.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

Can't stand them either, it's the dry texture. I'd give them away.

What a co-incidence, a few minutes ago, my elderley neighbour, put a bag of fresh picked broad beans over the fence for me, with a note to boil them in their pods them remove bean afterwards. I usually eat the frozen sort which I love, so am looking forward to these with my lunch tomorrow. Enjoy the weekend.
