I kind of feel sorry for postal workers who get caught stealing under those circumstances, in most cases they don't actually take anything, they just can't cope with the work load and stash the post, it shows somewhat the kind of person they are that they don't just throw the post away instead keeping it at home unopened, I suspect that they're thinking they will try and catch up at some point.

As in the recent case above there was no criminal intent, I know that is of little comfort for people who have post go missing, but I can't help thinking what if I was doing this persons job and lost the ability to cope.

I don't think my postie copes too well, I often get my post after 5pm.

If you mean the case in my area hon there was very definitely criminal intent.

He picked out mail that he liked the look of from everybody's rounds, added to his own round, took it home, then ad a big opening session every couple of weeks followed by a bonfire.

They managed to catch him between bonfires otherwise there would have been no evidence.

He was definitely robbing though - not under pressure from the size of his round.

He was taking mail from other people's rounds and adding it to his own round so that he could steal it.

I do feel ever so sorry for posties who have horrible round that they struggle with, but that isn't the case here.

But surely if that cash has gone missing due to a RM employee taking it, they would have to offer some form of compensation. I'd follow it up personally.

the sender put cash in the envelope
    the sender claims
the sender isnt covered for sending cash
    ergo no compensation
the op has no proof there was or wasnt cash in the envelope nor how it went missing if there was
there will be no record of the envelope being sealed, its simply a case of sealing any items ytou find damaged in anyway
they can lodge a complaint and may get some stamps as compensation but thats it
if you want cover for sending cash via post then its SD or nothing

I'm on the Surrey Hants border.

Me too - near Aldershot and we had the Royal Mail fraud department come round to take a statement as the person they arrested had my 5 year old sons birthday cards in his house - he had stolen his money.

In a side note my mother in law had a bunch of her birthday cards delivered yesterday - almost 3 weeks late, the envelopes slit open, and in a RM cellophane bag. On it, it says to let them know if anything is missing but she can't claim for cash can she? Most of her rellies put a £10 or £20 in the card for her every year and this year she got nothing.

My daughter's birthday is the week after hers and she didn't get any cards through the post this year. She was V disappointed as the wider family usually send her cards with a little something in them. At the time I reminded her that we're in a recession, and what it was like for us when we were out of work - but now I think maybe somebody grabbed them?

I understand that the prospect of birthday cards having "free" cash in them must be tempting, but I can't help feeling angry on behalf of all the 80 year old ladies and little kids who have been robbed of the excitement of opening lots of lovely birthday cards - as well as the cold hard cash.

I wonder if it is the same person. It was someone in the sorting office I thought as opposed to a delivery person. They told me he had 800 items in his house.

They hand delivered the cards to me and four others to take statements for court but the rest was resealed in a cellophane bag and put bag in the post so sounds like it might be what happened.

do you mean a mail centre?
    you have 2 points really
mail centres= large mail hubs for distribution
delivery office= the local office where staff deliver to you from

there are some combined MC/DO's but they are in the main seperate

To the person whos relatives send cash, sorry for the loss, but in future think about either sending cheques or postal orders next time. At least posties cant get their hands on the cash

Hmm not sure. They could only give me so many details until it goes to court and told me to keep my eye on the local paper for a while.

I am still shocked that someone would think they were more needy of my 5 year olds birthday money than he is.

you get theives in every job really though, its only because it effects other people as opposed to the company that it makes more news
its actually quite hard to track down/monitor
in mail centres they are large buildings and its very hard to see patterns
in delivery offices theres a whole section of time when posties are out on their own so its easy (if they want) to do whatever to mail
even worse because RM still allow/encourage staff to use their own cars on delivery
