I get the impression there are two types of rogues - those that look for valuables, and those that simply can't be bothered or can not manage doing their postal round.

  • Same thing happened to me in my area. I used to have a lot of respect for posties, but after the experiences I've had with the RM in the last 3 years I lost all respect for them and that's a shame.

I suppose living in a town, you get nicer posties. My posties awesome and I wish she never leaves. She was on holiday for a bit, but got a nice replacement

Our postman is brilliant, and completely trustworthy. I hate it when he's off on his hols cos his temp replacement is never as good. All this talk of bad'uns only makes me appreciate him all the more.

  • I kind of feel sorry for postal workers who get caught stealing under those circumstances, in most cases they don't actually take anything, they just can't cope with the work load and stash the post, it shows somewhat the kind of person they are that they don't just throw the post away instead keeping it at home unopened, I suspect that they're thinking they will try and catch up at some point.

As in the recent case above there was no criminal intent, I know that is of little comfort for people who have post go missing, but I can't help thinking what if I was doing this persons job and lost the ability to cope.

I don't think my postie copes too well, I often get my post after 5pm.
  • 30 years ago my post came before we went to work. Now it comes during the day, making 1st class meaningless and sometimes it isn't delivered at all and is stolen or just "undelivered". I think the Royal Mail is a joke.

    yawn yawn,old news
in those days businesses paid a higher price to subsidise the low price for domestic customers
there were probably in excess of 100,000 more delivery staff than now, given staff is down 60,000+ since single deliveries
nobody was interested when posties were saying what was happenning to the service and now its all coming to fruition

Well this is true. I have heard that they are under huge pressure now to get mail out and there aren't enough of them and they have to work unpaid overtime just to do the work they're allocated and they are only human after all.

this has been comnig for years,6 years ago i will admit the duties were too easy
i had a 'hard' duty and would be finished an hour early every day, however that was the 'carrot' of job & finish
there was plenty of overtime around and this was paid well
eg take out 1/2 a duty and get paid 4 hours rate
this would take an hour to 90 minutes to do
however now its at the other end, anything other than a quiet day is unachievable in many offices
bullying and harrassment is the RM managers style
if your manager isnt doing it then they get another in who will

if people moan their mail is 'late' now then just wait
RM have already got permission from the regulators to push mail dleiveries later by having posties start another hour later

In a side note my mother in law had a bunch of her birthday cards delivered yesterday - almost 3 weeks late, the envelopes slit open, and in a RM cellophane bag. On it, it says to let them know if anything is missing but she can't claim for cash can she? Most of her rellies put a £10 or £20 in the card for her every year and this year she got nothing.

My daughter's birthday is the week after hers and she didn't get any cards through the post this year. She was V disappointed as the wider family usually send her cards with a little something in them. At the time I reminded her that we're in a recession, and what it was like for us when we were out of work - but now I think maybe somebody grabbed them?

I understand that the prospect of birthday cards having "free" cash in them must be tempting, but I can't help feeling angry on behalf of all the 80 year old ladies and little kids who have been robbed of the excitement of opening lots of lovely birthday cards - as well as the cold hard cash.
