Postman in my area sacked for stealing mail.

Given the amount of post that goes through every sorting office every day, and how many items each individual postie will handle in a day (custardy may give an idea of numbers) - I think 300 is a relatively low number.
My postie from a few years ago was caught with 130,000 items stashed in house - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/staffordshire/3903273.stm - albeit 116,000 items of "junk" mail.
Given the size of Royal Mail, I'm sure their quantity of rogue employees is no better or worse than any other similar sized business.<--- Nothing to see here - move along --->0 -
I do tend to agree Steve and Im sure people only care because it is 'our' things that are going astray. How many times have we had threads where people openly boast about getting all their ebay packaging and envelopes out of the stationery cupboard at work, or even using the franking machine there to send stuff and yet no one bats an eye lid at that theft.
I recently complained to a National charity that i had received a DVD from an ebay seller franked by them and I asked them whether the employee had permission and whether the charity was reimbursed for the costs, as otherwise I would certainly feel differently about donating to them again. Got a very basic generic response saying matter passed to appropriate department and that all donations were very welcome and would I like a volunteering pack about their latest campaigns, which I rather felt missed the point.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. in terms of daily amounts its nothing
thats would be 1 letter per door for 1/3 of my duty
also its common for these items of 'mail' to be unaddressed junk mail when reported in the news
however if one of those 300 items is mail and is yours then it doesnt matter if its 1 or 1000 items0 -
I am told that the items of mail were dated over a ten day time period so it was about 30 items a day - which sounded like a lot to me - but I take Custardy's point about it being a small amount of mail in the scheme of things.
I'd also like to point out that our own postman is a little treasureas I'm sure the majority of hardworking RM employees are, and agree with stevew8975 that there are people with flexible morality in all walks of life.

over that period its either just a small amount of whats been stolen/delayed or its some weird issue with one address
theres just no point in delaying 30 items over 10 days0 -

It was 300 over ten days hon. I don't think they were delayed and that he planned to deliver them eventually - I think they were taken.
I was told that he'd snaffle mail that looked interesting when sorting the incoming post and put it in his own delivery, then take them home and open the latest haul at his leisure (having a bonfire every couple of weeks to clear the decks.)Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted. You deliver approximately 1500 a day so does sound a little odd on numbers!0

I'm probably still being a bit dimbut what's odd about the numbers? I don't understand what you mean? Would you mind explaining it a bit?
The way I've had it explained to me is that he sorts mail as it comes in to the depot and cherry picks out items he fancies and adds them to his own delivery round to take out later. He then takes those items home. (not sure how or when) I can't work out where the numbers come in?He'd be adding an average of 30 items a day to his approx 1500 a day round - but nobody would notice that would they?

this is ther common MO for mail thieves
its what makes it harder to track them down as it takes ages for a pattern to show0
