I've just come across this thread after having a problem with my Samsung RC21DCNS (with water and ice dispenser) in that I've come to it this morning and the temperature of the freezer hadn't increased and the beeping hadn't come on, but the food inside had clearly partially defrosted.

There's a buzzing noise at the back which I understand is the compressor working overtime to get things back to normal, but after trying to deal with it today, the temp increased to -15C and after closing the door and making sure it was shut, it wouldn't go back to its normal temp of -18C.

I emptied the ice box as in its state it was trickling water and then put it on power freeze but it wouldn't go lower than -15C. I've since taken it off from power freeze and it's eventually gone back to -18C. I haven't looked inside again at this point as if I keep opening and closing it, that's not going to really help.

When I open either door, by the way, the buzzing stops but it resumes when I close them. Also, I think I may have had this happen before where I had some defrosting because the door wasn't quite shut but not open enough to make the temp change nor make it beep (which surely defeats the point of that!).

If anyone can please tell me whether I'm looking at a fault (it was bought in Feb 2007 and I remember from Watchdog in, I think 2008, that the warranties were extended to 5 years by Samsung) or whether it's just carelessness from my part, last night not quite closing it, that would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Dom Robinson

Edit: Looks like it's just carelessness. I gave it a full 2hrs, during which my heart stopped a few times - or at least felt like it, but the food has gone back to normal. However, it's still making that loud noise. I'll give Samsung a shout tomorrow.

Late edit: The noise has since stopped, but I'll still email Samsung anyway.

  • Thanks to you and all the other posts we have managed to de-ice the fridge inside and all seems to be working well now - temperature is back to what it should be and the fridge is quiet again!! I think we have just saved ourselves at least £200 or possibly much more for a new one!:j:j

With an update on my last post.... After reading all the posts and email from Samsung saying that it sounded like a fault but they wouldn't do anything because it was out of warranty! OH said he wasn't prepared to pay for an engineer to rip us off so he had a look at the fridge, took the panel at the back of the fridge off ( it had frozen solid!!) and took the hairdryer to it. Our fan was still working but had iced up around it. He made a bigger hole in the drain (as per Shamrockabc's engineers advice) and put it all back together. It wasn't too difficult to do, the trickiest part was getting to the screw holes that had iced up.

The result is that the buzzing noise seems to have gone! Fridge is working fine and hopefully all is rosey in beebee land. :T

I emailed Samsung last night and have had a reply today. They've asked for my serial number. Does anyone know where that is, please? I've given them the other details they've asked for in the meantime, along with the order number and company where I bought it since, if the serial number is on the back of the unit, it's not coming away from the wall any time soon as I'm only one man and it's very heavy.

Think it's on the sticker on the bottom left of the machine as you look at it. Hope this helps.....

Thanks very much for that. I've technically found it, but it's too close to the unit next to it to get a note of the number. When I eventually get someone from Samsung down, they can help me shift it :)

The buzzing noise you heard - is it a bit like a helicopter sort of noise? I have a similar model and just last year an engineer came out to fit something to fix the problem mentioned on watchdog. I had been sent a letter asking me to phone to book an appointment and they came within a day or two. Anyway, prior to the fix I'd been getting the noise which stopped when I opened the fridge door, but I've never heard it since.
The fix is done free of charge as it's to fix a known possible manufacturing fault so I'd phone Samsung and ask about your fridge mentioning watchdog and see what they say.

ETA: I kept all the info I could find about this in case my FF should develop the problem in the future. I found this:
Samsung Electronics would ask any customers who have this problem with their RS21 to call this freephone number, 0800 988 0123, to arrange for it to be fixed under this extended warranty. Samsung Electronics would like to reassure all customers of its commitment to quality customer service and would ask anyone with questions to call the number above.

    It's only a game

i purchased the RS21DGRS fridge freezer in 2005, and finaly had the modification carried out last April last year 2010,
it has now started the rattle again and the fridge is overheating

    so rang samsung today,
thier reply,, sorry sir we cant help you,, but we can give you a number for an engineer to have the fridge repaired yourself.

the reason,, as the fridge was now over 6 yrs old,,, that they were no longer liable, and that the new parts fitted only have a 90 day warranty

when i said if it was for a fridge that did not have any known faults i would find that totaly understandable and reasonable,,
but as samsung knows there is a design fault, and that they had even tried the modification, surely out of courtesy, they could look at it,, but the answer was still no...i was even passed on to customer complaints but still to no avail!!!!

yes its a 6 yr old fridge,, but as others have said,, my last fridgefreezer lasted nearly 20 yrs

    anyone have any ideas

just read through the problems with regard to a possible fire risk,, so looked at the samsung site and typed in my serial number,, and it said i needed a home visit to rectify the problem...

funny how they wont cover the existing problem i have reported again though, now that the extended warranty is up!!!
