apparently they dont have to , they are above the law. but i am going to question this with my local council as it is , in effect , littering

and also thinking about it probably in contravention to the road traffic act , if its not cleaned up it causes a hazard to other road users

what about the exhaust emissions from your car?

when do you clean them up?

with all due respect, when it comes to a man boasting about endangering the life of children, there's little else to do but hazard a guess as to WHY he'd do that? It's not just other's children hes doing it to, but his own as well. When you drive AT a child it's attempting murder is it not?
    The options are:
He's truly a sick individual and needs reporting to the police on a dangerous driving/attempted murder charge and possibly chucking in a cell with other child killers.
He's got a little penis/ never gets his leg over and ditto the above
    or
He's a fantasist and is making it all up just to get a reaction. He drives a Micra and owns a chequered picnic rug, a thermos and two deckchairs.

You choose. I mean, what do you say to someone who is blatantly acting like a prize pillock? "oh thats nice... carry on... " ?
Its a bit like saying you enjoy torturing cats and expecting cat lovers to not say anything....

He was actually one of the main characters I was referring to as some of his posts seem to only contain insults so you have no reason to rant at me

sorry... the man (I refuse to refer to him as a gentleman) had me hurling insults which I did feel were a little strong for such a forum a little after, so took that as aimed at me during my thoughts. No worries though. Micra man had better not complain when some boy racer knocks his kiddy down when they're playing footie in his cul de sac though, as kids don't pay road tax....

Exactly my point. What's the need for that remark, I have actually been quite supportive of horses on the road earlier in this thread. My better half is also a considerate road user who wouldn't dream of not slowing right down and giving a wide berth to horses and their riders yet he drives an Audi so regardless of how he actually drives and the consideration he gives, you have labelled him an 'ape' in addition to the other generalisations you have made about Audi drivers in other posts.

Sorry maybe I should have been more specific. Except for those deliberately endangering the lives of my friends/family because they find it amusing. I'm sorry but he is a prize idiot and although it is a sweeping generalisation most of the behaviour he has been bragging about comes from arrogant people driving cars in the same range as Audis.:p

No worries! Apologies as my post was typed immediately after seeing the Audi drivers/apes comment so i was a tad harsh in my response. I don't see any sense either in claiming to drive at full speed etc at a horse on a road. I don't see why we can't all just use the roads and make allowances for each other. I can honestly say I have never been late for something or made any great sacrifice from slowing down for a few seconds to go past a horse. However, following a car the other night driving at 25mph on a wide 50mph speed limit road was highly irritating. I couldn't overtake because of cars coming in the opposite direction and wouldn't have dared as he was all over the road, much more unpredictable than any horse I've ever seen on the road! That irritated me considerably!

I get what you're saying Mrspottydog my point is though that it's generalisations like that that get the backs up of people that were supporting your arguements and makes you sound as bad as others (admittedly not someone who seems to find sport in endagering lives). That's all I'm saying :)
  • I ride my horse in Central London.
Amost 100% of the motorists are curtious towards us and many people especially children enjoy the opportunity of meeting and stroking my horse. In London we have a 30 m.p.h speed limit throughout London and lots of speed cameras and traffic enforcement cameras especially those enforcing the London Congestion Zone . Maybe this degree of enforcement should be rolled out and extended to other areas of the country including the rural roads in the countryside to ensure that those that drive irresponsibly are quickly caught and repremanded. Cars can be potential lethal weapons and can cause serious injuries and those driving them should be more than aware of the injuries that they can cause to others.
For those that are frustrated at being delayed by a few minutes because of horse riders, cyclists and other motor veicles being driven slowly I suggest you spend some time driving in the rush hour in Central London where our roads are almost always gridlocked by traffic jams and the average journey speed is well below the 30 M.P.H. limit.
There appears to be a lot of generalisation written in the posts most of which I suspect is just banter but please drive and ride with caution and consideration to each other as most accidents have a dramatic effect on the future lives of those involved, their relatives and friends and in many cases are avoidable.
    So please 'Drive with Caution'.
  • Sorry, I haven't read all of the posts, but the ones I have read made me feel sick & scared.

I have a horse, which I work hard to pay for. I keep him at a livery yard. I am by no means rich or posh. I am up at the stables every morning before work & every night after work to care for him and I love him dearly and i love to ride and occasionally compete at a low local level. (I am 33 if that's of any consequence, not a teenager).

He isn't worth very much compared to some horses, perhaps £3000. However, to me he is irreplaceable & priceless. He's like a big pet I can't take home.

Now I do hack out (go for treks) and although I try to avoid roads, especially busy ones, it's impossible. There are so many bridleways being closed and 'waste land' that we used to use being built on and developed. We need to use the roads to get to the woods and lanes and keep our horses fit and exercised.

My horse is well trained, sensible on the roads. I always wear a hi-viz vest and pull in to allow vehichles to pass or I trot on to the nearest layby if the road is too narrow to pass me safely. I ALWAYS thank people for being patient.

Even so, I have been shouted at that I shouldn't be on the road. I have been driven AT by car who, when I signalled to ask him to slow down, he sped up violently, I am talking 80 mph on a quiet country road and swerve in my direction. On that occasion, I was so scared and concentrating on trying to control my horse, who behaved very well and managed not to bolt or spin onto the road. I didn;t get a good description to inform the police. Had my horse not been well controlled, that could have ended in a serious accident probably with me and my horse dead.

At the end of the day, horses are animals and a car passing quickly, may frighten them. Water or grit sprayed of the wheels of a car will frighten them and their natural instinct is flight when scared. The reason you are supposed to pass a horse slow and wide is to allow for this. if you are considerate, there should be no danger to your car, you, me or my horse.

Now I appreciate that not all riders set a good example and believe me, we as considerate riders despise them as much as the drivers they have annoyed. But please please don't tar everyone with the same brush. Children, adults, even teenagers and their animals do have a right to travel on a road without being put at unnecessary risk intentionally.

Please don't put my life at risk and the life of my horse because another rider has annoyed you, or you are in a hurry.
  • Now - everyone here does know that Mister "Three Points" Lahey was recently pulled for driving an unroadworthy vehicle, right?

Just thought everyone should be in full possession of the facts as we discuss exactly how responsible and safe horse-riders are on the road, and how much respect and consideration they have for other road users :)
