why do horse owners think they own the road ?

It is not possible to despise horse riders more than i do. I live out in the country side and the roads are riddled with them.
It was only last week i had a 13 year old doing hand signals telling me to slow down or whatever. And they never thank you, you could drive at 1/2mph and 15 mile wide and you wouldn't get a single thank you.
As for them selfish bstards who ride 2 wide on a corner as though to say "yeah, wait for us" i just tear !!!! past them close and fast.
I can't believe how many horse riders are fat, it just goes to show what people horse riders can be, they don't care about cars on the road, don't care about their horses curling one out wherever they are yet probably whinge at dog owners who do the same and they don't care that their 20 stone fat !!!! is breaking the horses back.
In my opinion, there are millions of bridleways where i live, if your horse is too scared to walk on the road - get off the f'ing road then.
Ok, I expect it will be pointless replying to ignorant people such as yourself, but I feel I have to reply.
I ride two abreast on roads- it is perfectly legal. My horse is young, and in order for her not to be scared, I have another horse on the outside to create a barrier between her and the traffic. How do you ever expect to traffic proof a horse if you do not take it out on the roads?
FYI I'm not fat, and I have a large horse- one that will put a bloody big dent in your car should you get up her !!!!.
There is a HUGE difference between horse manure and dog crap. Will horse poo blind you? Err no.
"Tearing past close and fast" is a great way to try and kill yourself, when you have a hoof coming through your windscreen, the rider and the horse.
It is ignorant, selfish people like you that make horses a liability; having some idiot whizz pass them at 70mph about 2 inches away from them is enough to terrify any horse.
Be a bit more considerate. If a rider doesn't thank you, they are rude I agree, but please don't take it out on the next one you meet.0 -

Oh dear! Life must be such a strain for you...
Moving on though...
I find it quite a laugh actually reading this post/thread, then I remembered it was actually how people feel and not just some sort of odd joke!
Horses have as much right to be on the roads but please remember this, no one and I mean no one wants to really be riding along the roads but since all the bridle paths are either now non-existant or are miles away (along ROADS) we have little choice. The fields you drive by are not free for all, they actually belong to people (believe us, we would much sooner be plodding along the fields then tackling inconsiderate road users). So please take some consideration and just pass wide and slow and two seconds later you are passed and no longer need to think about it.0 -

How do you ever expect to traffic proof a horse if you do not take it out on the roads? Take it on a bridleway, if it is timid or untrained then why take it on a road? You expect drivers to simply sit behind you and then overtake when possible - slow and wide, yet you don't have the common decency to move over. You are irresponsible.

Dear Mr Lahey & co,
As a horse rider in a professional capacity (i produce showjumpers at a high level) i will try to allow you to understand why horse riders use the roads.
1= Before i continue may i refer you to the highway code which will outline to you all the guildlines regarding equines on the roads, as a holder of a HGV licence i am well aware of this and frequently use it (i assume horseboxes are up there with your list of "hates?" audi's are up there in mine i regard them as vechiles for those who cannot afford a really decent car)
2= 90% of riders drive and therefore pay road tax and are just as entitled to use roads and utilse there tax in any way they see fit, in the majority of cases horse owners pay double tax as they have horseboxes on the road as well
3= the police i find take a very proactive view to motorists who do not respect the highway code and in particular in regards to horses and when given the number plates of offenders they will take very positive action4
4= i think you also fail to realise that horses weigh on average 3/4 of a ton and if you spook that by driving like a cretin, 3/4 of a ton on the bonnet of your beloveded A4 will not only write it off (and 9 times out of 10 it will be your fault and your insurance will not pay out) but will seriously injure or even kill you
if you require any more help remedying your ignorance please feel free to contact me
best wishes

Well I have insurance so nerr.
Thought I would be wasting my time. *rolls eyes*
Why take it on the road? SO SHE CAN LEARN. Children learn from experience, how is it any differnet for horses? When did I say we don't move over? Often there is enough room to pass two horses on the other side of the road. If we were blocking the road, of course we would either trot to a layby, or move over.
Anyway, I seem to be a little dense, the way you have edited my post completely twists what I have said. Well I just hope I don't meet you out on the roads.
Also, perhaps just think? Courtesy costs nothing, show a little consideration.0 -

I am not in the extreme hatred or the extreme like camp with horses. I do however dislike them and the culture that surrounds them.
In my experience horse owners are selfish and arrogant and have nowhere near as much money as they'd like people to believe, having horses is like being in some sort of club, and I would say that it is the vast majority of riders that do not offer any kind of thanks to drivers they are holding up.
I would also argue that it is downright irresponsible to take horses out on A roads. If they need to be transferred between sites using major roads, a trailer could be used, towed by the obligatory 4x4 which owners have "because of the horses".
Riding two abreast on roads is dangerous. It may not be illegal, but it is dangerous, particularly on blind corners, both for riders and for drivers. It is also common to find riders travelling round blind corners at very low speeds, when i've been told they should be travelling faster to clear the corner faster.
Just my two pence

also may i correct your issues with equine faeces, equines are herbivores as any matter will be digested plant matter which is perfectly safe for you to actually eat, it is different to dog faeces which can contain the lethal bacteria which causes the condition of toxiplasmosis which can be fatal and end in blindness, this is why horse droppings can be left on the road and dog cant
glad i could clear up another issue for you

Well yes, owning horses is "some kind of club" as they share a common interest, much as motorbike owners do.
Don't have a 4x4 or a trailer, or a lorry, so some of us have to use the roads to get to the few bridle paths.
Riding two abreast isn't ideal around blind corners, and something most riders try to avoid. But riding two abreast is actually a lot safer for all concerned if on a young horse- on straight stretches of road. I do try to trot around blind corners- I don't have a death wish, but perhaps cars should be going a little slower in the first place?0 -
One is not amused...0

1. My car cost £36,000 and i consider it to be decent. I could have bought just about any car i wanted and i don't have to justify to you or anyone why i chose the A4.
2. If i have 2 cars i pay 2 road taxes. Saying you have one horse but because you pay road tax makes it ok then you are not just arrogant but stupid too.
3. Are you saying that horses can do want they like but car drivers must adhere to the highway code?
4. With you on the horse it probably weighs a tonne, that still doesn't make it alright to be on a road.
It is you who requires help for your ignorance. The Summer Holiday of a Lifetime0
