i try not to mention anything to anyone anymore. it is hard to make anyone understand. (i mentioned to my aunt at christmas that i had been cutting my hair and i think she was shocked, she said i must go to her hairdresser who is realy cheap and only charges £12, and i had to sort of say , well i would see but i felt quite awkward). my husband is "early retired" and we chose this and although we haven't much money we are very happy
i'v come back to add to this that having to cut my own hair has given me new appreciation of hairdressers! it is really quite difficult to make it passable, it is very hard to get a straight bob. i wear it up when i go out and it looks nice but when its down i keep noticing bits i have missed! they make it look so easy when you go to the hairdressers!0 -
TBH, I am proud of how much we have cut back over the past few years and couldn't give a toss what people think:D
My folks are pretty well off and I was spoilt growing up but it always felt wrong to me IYKWIM. My mum would make cruel comments about others who would be scrimping and saving and she chose to not associate with people like that. Even as a child, I found this harsh. My sister and I never had to save for anything as we given it.
She HATES the fact that that person is now me:rotfl:....I love telling her about the bargains OH has got late at night etc or how I can make a nutricious meal for about £1.50 for all 3 of us. She actually cringes when I state we spend approx £180-£200PCM on food;)....if she has a dinner party...she gets caterers (sp) in.
By shopping around on insurances, utilities, food etc we are able to go away in our friends holiday home a few times a year. Although we are away for approx 3 weeks a year, I take all food and know where all the cheap places are to buy food or eat etc and free places to visit.

Whiteguineapig for what it's worth, I haven't visited a hairdresser in over 25 years. I used to cut, colour and perm it myself. Since I can no longer get my poor old paws high enough, Mr LW now washes, cuts and colours it for me (I gave up on the perms some years back - bad case of CBA).
Why?.... Because to me, visiting a hairdresser is next in line to visiting the dentist, scariness-wise.:cool:If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
someone I know made comments about how my heating is off, and that she felt you should be able to walk round your own house in a t shirt and shorts all year round. I pointed out by paying less for my gas and electric, I had more spare money to spend on me0

I talk about chilli jam, or onion marmalade and they ask where to buy it. I tell them they can have it for nothing and they screw noses up...some people only value something with a price tag on it. I should say I can get you a jar but it's not cheap.....and charge them £3 and give it to charity shouldn't I???0

I'll tell you what I'd say.
I'd say that I'm sick of the way we live, the way we waste, the frankly apalling excesses of modern life. A mobile phone is built with rare earth metals dug in the developing world, by people struggling not to starve, it gets packaged, shipped across the planet, bought with money we don't even have, then thrown away at a whim. I'm sick of the way we treat money - money we in the UK don't even really earn, our economy and businesses being built mostly around services and nonessentials. I'm sick of seeing things thrown away that our grandparents couldn't dream to have. I'm sick of it, and I'll have none of it.0 -

Excellent. A friend of mine (now ex friend) asked me what I had ever acheived. I replied that i had managed as a single mum to keep my own roof over my head, run a car, keep a fingerhold on my career and afforded a week in a caravan for me and my DS once a year. Said friend had the 4x4, the plasma, the games consoles, the clothes etc etc.
Now she has nothing, house reposessed, kids with first hand experience of bailiffs knocking on the door etc etc.
Don't get me wrong I've run up debt in the past and am still paying it back. However I have always paid into a pension, and have equity in my house. So on the great balance sheet of life i'm in the black financially and hopefully carbon footprint wise or at least as far as I can be.
Here's a quote i love.
Only when the last tree has died, the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize that we cannot eat money.
