Scammer using my ebay acount - from this IP address - how??

am I right in thinking you can tell the location/country of someone from their Ip address?

Unless it is Virgin broadband where you can narrow it down to an area due to their network setup, the best that you can do is identify the location/country of the ISP.

My IP address says that I am in Rochdale 'cos I'm with Zen. My actual location is over 100 miles away

aha - I have just read through the responses the scammer sent to people who had made enquiries - found this -

Hi there,
You can drive it. I can sell it for 900 pounds. I work as an engineer in military service therefore would like to apologies for late replies, military base regulations don't allow outside calls for a faster communication. Won't be accepting a cash on collection deal since the last champ made me travel 4 hours back home to tell me he had a family emergency and if I accept a few pounds less. I am offering a 5 days refund and return policy. To keep a long story short I've followed eBay's guidelines and arranged for the winner an inspection with RAC(already paid for). If you have the cash and determined to strike a deal then all we have to do is to inform eBay and register the transaction with them.

I would put money on this being a nigerian scammer - most of them claim to be uncontactable as they are in the military (UK or US) - gets them out of having to talk to people, and lends them an air of credibility.

Was on ebay live chat, waiting to be transferred ot the right department, the idiots just cut me off... will try again in a mo...

ebay hijacking has been going on for years, they dont want to admit it so they try to blame you, thats my theory, look at how many stories there are on it,is it ebay or is it mass hysteria?

okaayy - am being transferred again but the last person I spoke to on ebay live chat help or whatever it is called just said "I checked on your account and it is showing here that someone indeed tried to access your account."

I would second the above advice, although it looks like yet another ebay account hacked on their site and not your computer you MUST rule out your computer by following RIK's advice
