I find myself in agreement with CHR15. To use your example, a door chain will help prevent a burglary. Someone posing as a gas reader trying to get into your house will have a harder time getting through your door (assuming you insist they show their ID before you unlock your chain). Being unable to get past this base, the 'gas reader' will go elsewhere.JustPassingBy wrote: »
However, if someone is determined to get into your house any way possible, the door chain will certainly not help. The door chain still provides an extra layer of security, but of course it can only go so far.
So the MAC filtering will help in the same way a door chain will.
OP: Ivrytwr3 I think has summarised the best list of possibilities for you to muse over.0 -
I absolutely understand what you're saying JustPassingBy: any further steps for security are made redundant if you have a strong password. The other measures are not entirely useless. It does add that little extra layer of security, but only require at best a little more work and time for the would be infiltrator if they are determined to compromise your network.JustPassingBy wrote: »More or less. WPA and a good passphrase will see you through the next 1000 years. If you are expecting to live for longer increase the passphrase length.0 -

Is it worth going to all the trouble of either a neighbour or someone sitting outside the OPs home hacking into the OPs router and computer to hack the OPs eBay account?
When you said the listing that was made but was not yours did it have a different location or a mobile phone number to call or emaill address to contact?
I think eBay fobbed you off by saying the listing was from your IP address, yes it is possible for someone else to get your IP address because they can be re-allocated or in some instances certain ISPs can use a batch of IP address's the same but then it would be a hell of a coincidence for someone to end up with your IP address and then know you have an eBay account have access to your passwords and then set up their own auction in your name.
I would still look to your computer for problems, run malwarebytes and post the log file here.0 -
You're right, the use of them in series will have no additional benefit (which is of course where the analogy between wifi and home security breaks down). I'm now in full agreement with JustPassingBy: Just WPA(2) and a strong password for network security (disregarding other factors such as careless authorised users of your network.)JustPassingBy wrote: »Suppose MAC filtering was equally effective (it's not, as you acknowledge, but that's by the way). What do you gain by using both at the same time?0 -

If the hacker/s have the actual passkey at hand they STILL wouldnt be able to use an outside computer if they couldnt get a hold of the mac code:idea:0 -
Fact ~
Ebay 'claim' nothing unusual went on. So we can assume it was the same ip
So my initial guess is someones used the actual 'in house' computer
That or someones hacked the router
I personally dont know of any way of masking an ip EXACTLY to look like what you want it to (For starters, theyd need to know what the actual ip is)
Id also be looking at a possible 'key logger' on the computer
It could also be being controlled 'remotely'
Now if everyone can stop arguing over pedantic sh*te ~ perhaps we could get on with helping the OP?:idea:0 -
I agree RIK but I would have thought if it was "in house" then that would have been the first place the OP looked.
If it was someone outside who hacked the router then they have gone to a lot of effort to gain accesss, find the OPs eBay passwords just to place an auction.
As to eBay saying "nothing unusual went on" I certainly wouldn't put it past them to get it wrong.0
