Thanks for all your recommendations, many brands mentioned on here I have never heard of.

I can highly recommend Botanics Soothing Eye Make up remover from Boots. Currently reduced to £1.99 for 150 ml.
No toiletries challenge, started 18/1/2010 - Putting £1 in my savings jar for every item that I use up. Pot 1 to 4 = £261. Pot 5=£23
    Boots points:£39.21. Extra money in 2012:£674.59. In 2013 £603.48. 2014: £85. 2015: £0 :j

Right then ladies, you have inspired me to have a go at using some cheaper brands - I am a Clarins girl through-and-through as you will see. I have always thought that you cant go cheap with the products you use on your face, but I am starting to see that maybe thats all in my head - I think I have been suckered in by the beauty counters, and maybe its time to change.

I took a trip out at lunchtime, and have bought the following to try for a month instead of my usual products. Hopefully I will be converted!!

Boots own Fragrance Free Eye Make Up Remover £1.49 to replace Clarins Gentle Eye Make Up Remover £15

Simple Face wipes £1.99 (in offer in Superdrug) to replace Clarins One Step Facial Cleanser £17.50

Garnier Nutritionist Night Cream £5 (on offer in Tesco) to replace Clarins Multi Active Night Cream £40

Superdrug Natural High Radiance Balm £1.95 (on offer) to replace Clarins Hydraquench Lotion £32

Garnier Nutritionist Eye Renew Cream £5 (on offer in Tesco) to replace Clarins Eye Contour Gel £25

Wish me luck, and I will post back in a month if anyone is still reading!

Nessa64, it would be great to hear how you are getting on. I am particularly interested in hearing about Superdrugs Natural High Radiance Balm, what a bargain price compared to the hydraquench lotion.

I hope you like all the products, it would save you a lot of money.

Whilst men think we just roll out of bed looking fresh as a daisy, it takes time and effort for us girls too look great! But it can sometimes be a bit costly, so we're asking MoneySavers to tell us what their fave under £5 beauty products are.

My faves would be Carmex lipbalm - comes in the iconic little pot and at £2.49 is very reasonable. I use both the original and cherry versions (The cherry being more glossy and the original being more heavy duty for winter), and coconut oil - I buy 90gm pots at the chemist for £1.10 and it last 2-3 months at a time, it's a great moisturiser and I occassionally use it as a hair treatment. It works much better than a lot of the expensive moisturisers I've used designed for dry skin.

Sadly I can't use Vaseline as a lip gloss :-( I tried it a few years ago and it bought my mouth out with an ezema type irritation round the sides (used to have ezema round my mouth when I was a kid), too many apples also do the same thing.

However, I did invest in some Q10 eye cream at Wilkinsons yesterday, it was £1.78 and exactly the same as more expensive ones....now let's see if it makes any difference

I love St Ives Apricot facial scrub, think it was the first scrub i ever used and always go back to it, i love the smell and clean feel after it and its dead creamy.

For fragrance free wipes i use wilkinsons own brand think they are £1.99 but usually always have BOGOF offers, just as good as other fragrance free wipes. :)
  • New to posting so hope this is OK!
When you've found some bargain facial cleansing wipes, make them last twice as long by cutting them in half! Make sure you keep the second half airtight in the pack till you use it. I find a half-size wipe is plenty for cleansing, but I don't use lots of make up.

Johnsons 24 hour moisture hand cream is the business £1.99 for 50ml at Boots, but its often cheaper if you shop around, I think its half price at Tescos at the mo.

I work with and have young children so I'm constantly washing my hands, making them very dry. I bought some of this yesterday (99p, Tesco) and I have to say that it's the best I've tried (even better than the lovely £10-a-go Dead Sea Lotion I have). I went back and bought another 4 tubes today!

Loving this thread - thank you SO much to all the contributors. I also bought 2 of the Natural High Radiance Balms (as it's also on offer in Superdrug) and updated my make-up at a fraction of the cost I'd usually spend. Now to find non-flaky mascara and face powder...
  • Avon's products usually do what they say on the tin, for a fraction of the cost of similar premium-brand products. When I want to try a new one from the catalogue, or when I've bought something good from my Avon lady, I buy on eBay to save even more. Usually I can get excellent anti-ageing moisturiers around £6 inc. postage.
  • Also try Boots' own hand and nail cream, very cheap and really does the job

I recentl got a sample of Urban Decay Primer Potion - not cheap at #11 per bottle, but it will help even cheap eyeshadow last forever.

A lot of beauty bloggers speak highly of Sleek - they're designed for black skin which means that their eyeshadows are very highly pigmented.
