Apparently sweetpea roots dont like to be disturbed so you can start them off indoors in toilet rolls, then just plant the whole thing, soggy toilet roll and all in the garden and it will rot away! Mine are doing really well!

hi Lemonjelly,,oh dear ur toms are waiting for some warmer weather maybe? Were they a new batch of seeds u bought ? Did u put your greenhouse up? How exciting what sort is it? I would LOVE a greenhouse!! Glad your sprouts are up and doing ok,,,,not sure i could eat a sprout even if i grew it !!!
I put some spuds in tubs/hessian sack things and the ground today,,also managed to plant my autumn bliss rasps that i bought on ebay from a nursery in scotland.
I do not want to mention i potted on my tom seeds,,so i wont LOL ;-)
    happy gardening

Hi Kirsty822001, my first 2 toms have sprouted!:j

They're the same seeds as last year. I did worry that the compost was too wet, but perhaps they were just too cold. I hope we get some more sprouting soon! I hope so - they are the same batch of seeds as I used last year, & I got a phenomenal crop which tasted so lovely I struggle to eat these shop bought force grown rubbish now!

My greenhouse is just a small plastic cover wilkinsons thingy (nice description there eh?:o) Last year it got very full as the tomato plants grew, so we bought another (the walk in style - there was a thread about it recently) to fit extra stuff in.

I planted some brocolli seeds this weekend, & chopped up some wood from the pruning I had done.

The weather appears to be improving, & it seems that frosts may have ceased...
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

Update: I can't get the Mantis tiller to start. :(

I've moved one of the gooseberry bushes to the opposite side of the garden:

I've probably left it a bit late, as I can see green tips to the buds. I'll probably leave the other one in situ, just in case. I can always move it next year. I've pruned it a little bit too. Probably not very well. :o

The Kumatoes are ok too, as are the other tomato varieties I've sown.

Today I bought some horse manure / mushroom compost. Some went in the new gooseberry hole, some round the rhubarb and some on the existing vegetable plot by the greenhouse. I don't think I'll be planting outside until a few weeks time, so that should be ok I think.

I've sown spare seeds of all the chillies and tomatoes, just in case something goes wrong with the first lot. I've also sown a gherkin, although it might be a bit early for that.

I've also got my tomato growbags so I'll be ready to go soon. I've gone for the nice deep (and expensive at £3.99 :( ) Levingtons Giant Growbags, so I hope they're worth the expense.

Oh yeah, one more thing. Following the 2008 pumpkin challenge (I lost), and the 2009 swede competition (I won), this year I have a £5 bet on who can grow the tallest Kale Walking Stick. Don't blame me, I didn't choose it. Nor do I particularly want to bother with it, as I'm not a fan of kale and it'll be a stupid amount of work. Still, a bet's a bet. :rotfl:

  • MrBadexample your gardening/planting seems to be coming togethernicely ,,,how come your pots are so neat and clean? Mine are a mess after seeing yours,,actually some of mine blew over after i had just potted them on GRRRR
I too have a gooseberry bush with the same green shoots now showing,,,do u know when we have to net them at all? I assume its when the fruit appears? I know we have to look for insects making their home on the bush but i havent managed to do that yet.

WELL DONE LEMONJELLY yeyyyyyyyy am so pleased your Toms are up and waving at you!!! It is so satisfying when they appear finally!
I havent put anything else in my propagators as i dont think i should cos i dont think i can put anything out in the mini 4 tier greenhouse thingy yet until its warmer???
I have potted on and filled the windowsills!!
I am so interested in the wilkos walk in greenhouse thingy,,just need to persuade hubby and get suitable stuff to weigh it down. I have mostly lawn and lots of tubs,,,i am slowly pinching more garden to plant hahaha they havent noticed the last bit i added last weekend to plant rasps in! Last year i also did well with toms in little greenhouse (4 shelved) but i put huge pots and barrels and planted in the ground on the right side of the garden which gets sun but nothing did very well,,,the clematis was eaten in 3 days by slugs i think. Have planted rasps there now, will add pots and see what works,,toms and runners did ok there last yr.
I have onion sets from last yr with tiny little green shoots but i havent put them in yet,,,does anyone know if its ok to stick them in now?
    happy gardening
