Yes, all DIVX players handle AVI and the xvid codec.

thats wrong, my dvd player downstairs only plays back divx not xvid [2 different codecs]......

However if you don't know if this does then there is a bush one in the Makro mail for £24.99 + vat which says it plays divx and xvid.... i can scan the advert for you if u want......

I see that this is described as a "5.1 divx dvd player", but the description doesnt state this... Can anyone confirm if this will play 5.1 encoded divx/xvid files, as the two divx playing dvd players that I have (Pioneer 575 and Philips DVP630) will only play 2.0 Divx/Xvid and not 5.1 encoded files.

I bought one of the Targa's from Lydl at £19-00 & the model was. DP5100X.

It also has the chip that plays an Unpacked Divx (no jerking of picture) great buy.

That feature is called Packed Bitstream and required a firmware update (easy to do).

You don't need to convert an xvid to DVD just to get around Packed Bitstream as you can run Mpeg4 Modifier to remove it in the source file without re-encoding.

    FYI....

The Targa was a rebanded LG which was great value at £49 let alone the reduced £19.

Its the firmware which enables xvid with packed bitsteam to play smoothly not the chip. ESS and Zoran cope out the box, Mediatek as in the Targa just needed a firmware update which was free to fix this.

If your brand of player can't cope as 'davemuk' said use mpeg4modifier and unpack it. It takes a new minutes at most.

    Converting divx to dvd...13 hours....madness !!!

Most players will do divx as well as xvid. If however you have one that won't use fourcc to change the codec header and 99% chance it will work :)
(divx to xvid and vice versa)

    Tron_ADS, the Pioneer 575 plays 5.1 ac3 sound.

Given this player can do Nero Digital (suggested at by Nero, not stated) its probably a rebranded Siemssen under the Tevion brand as thats the Aldi brand. They use the Zoran chip. These units were sold in Germany recently, they are cheap and cheerful and do a reasonable job if you read the german forums. They are not as well built as the Targa DP5100x (the rebranded LG) but for 29.99 what do you expect :)

I do not think the datsa rate on USB 1.0 is faster enough. Lots of the DivX player have USB support but this is USB 1.0. Which cannot cope with the sustained data rates for Xvid/Divx.

If there is a USB 2.0 player let me know! The KISS players have wireless (WEP no WPA) and ethernet. The later is the most reliable solution. Wifi even the 802g can be subject to perfomance variation.

What do you use to replace the FourCC is there a guide on how to do it?

I did not know Pioneer did DivX! Thanks found this HDMI upconverting model. What is the cheapest for the Poineer 575? Are they quite compatible with Xvids and DivX?

Have there been many problems with the ALDI player with a 3 year warantee I can live with poor build :)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FourCC

Get fourcc by inmatix open your xvid your Bush player can't play. Confirm the fourCC is really Xvid and change to divx in both fields.
    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/AVI_FourCC_Code_Changer.htm

I'm pretty sure its USB1 not USB2. Self powered USB HD might work, it will vary from model to model (of HD)

The Targa DP5100x memory card slot is no more than a USB adapter really. USB1 is fast enough to play divx / xvid from as I've done it and other reported online it works fine :)

The Pioneer 575 is an old model, you might find it on ebay still or old stock. Check out Pioneer.co.uk for details of the newer models like the 490. If you don't need HDMI check out the Pioneer DV-393-S. Pioneer are based on mediatek chipset.
