Personally, this is an interesting dilemma as although my OH is not materialistic enough to want a £7k ring, or even a £4k ring, I find it interesting that some people think that £4k is a lot to spend on a ring.

As I am thinking of buying one shortly, I was just interested in finding out how much is acceptable (and not an insane) amount to spend on an engagement ring?

the (old fashioned maybe) amount to spend on an engagement ring, is one months take home pay x

You get what you pay for is the biggest crock I come across, it's up there with people calling a purchase a investment.
Until the woman offers some off her own money or to buy the man something of equal value then where's the equality or idea of partnership.

I earn £10k a year more than my boyfriend, so I'd be putting plenty into the relationship if he were to buy me a ring.

My brother actually did this. His girlfriend was into expensive stuff and he found a similar looking ring in Argos for something like £50. He bought it, gave it to her and she was made up. Ratner would have been proud.

Over a period of weeks, the stones deteriorated and needed "re-pointing" (I thought that was something to do with brickwork???) and so she took the ring to the jewellers.

Shocked, she found out that it would cost more to re-point the stones than the ring was worth, when he accurately valued the ring and stormed off home.

When the bruising subsided, he bought her a more expensive model and she insisted on coming to the shop to prove how much it cost. They're still together though.

I had a Tiffany engagement ring and it clearly said Tiffany inside the ring, along with the serial number. So unless she's thick as bottled sh*te, she's going to notice. Also, the certificate is going to have the name of the jeweller on it.
  • I completely understand the dilemma here and I sympathise. It sounds like Heidi is not demanding a designer ring, mearly stated that she would love one, just like I would love a Porsche etc.

I agree with a lot of the posters that I think the fact you are willing to spend the rest of your life together is a big enough commitment and you don't need a 7 or 4k ring, it should be about more than bling. This reminds me of the numerous arguments I have had with my g/f about whether an engagement ring should cost 1, 2 or 3 months salary....mainly banter but a dilemma never the less.

I am in Brazil at the moment and the trend is no diamonds for engagement rings and the people here seem more than happy....diamonds are a man's worst enemy!
