  • Hi,

I live near Glasgow. There is loads of things to do for free the Art Gallery and Transport museam are free in the west end and on the bus routes. There is loads of parks but the weather in october could be dogey.

There is the science centre as well they quite often have discounted tickets and is excellent for the kids.

Other option as others have mentioned would be a caravan park there are some lovely ones on the Ayr coast (Craig Tara is the Haven one), but Ayr is an hour or so away from the airport so maybe a night in Glasgow first wouldn't be a bad idea if your arriving late evening.

Hmmm are you looking for city centre ideally then? The best I've found so far would be about £450 I think for 2 nights in Glasgow followed by 5 nights in Edinburgh, but I'm still looking! Lots of places seem to do minimum 2 night stay so it might mean staying the first two nights in Glasgow then moving on to Edinburgh and going back to Glasgow on the last day for your flight-that shouldn't be a problem though if you're flying quite late should it?

  • We have never ever been to a Butlins or similar type holiday but someone suggested a Haven holiday and I spoke to a lovely woman called Myra on the phone. The holiday is in Ayr. I was thinking as the booking of the holiday has gone so wrong if I should go the whole hog and see what a Haven holiday is like!! It's really not our kind of thing but hey, we might enjoy it! Are there ever any special offers (cheaper deals) with Haven? Has anyone got any reviews of what these places are like?
There are a few options - we could stay in Glasgow for the full 7 days, do sightseeing
Stay in Glasgow 2 days, Edinburgh 3 days, Glasgow 2 days
But I have a sneaking suspicion it's going to be costly - 2 teenagers and an 8 yr old - all those shops!!!!!!!

Would really be interested in what people think of the idea of a Haven type holiday - will I regret it? Is it expensive once you get there? Is it in the middle of nowhere? Can we still visit places. Will I have to take part in the knobbly knees contest???????

Have just read a review written in January and they said there was fighting, swearing, threadbare sheets, toilets smelled really awful  in the Haven place.

You could check to see if there are any Sun holidays available for that time, I don't think there are any for October at the moment but there should be later in the year. We have been on holiday with them for the past 7 years which include Haven, Parkdean etc and never had any problem with them, the only thing to remember is if its a basic caravan it could get quite cold in there (we take a fan heater, but go by car) so an upgrade may be an option
  • Whenever I go anywhere I always book self catering accommodation which can often work out cheaper and more comfortable than hotels and especially suitable for a family. Google self catering Glasgow and see if any houses or apartments are available
    It's great to be ALIVE!
  • Yes, I've been googling until my finger is dropping off - the Glasgow apartments I have found I can get for about £475 but it seems a lot when originally all I wanted was a cheap week in the sun (apartment was £250 and only 5 min walk to the beach).

Anyone any knowledge of Hoseasons? Husband is a bit reluctant to a caravan park because he is used to all mod cons, and his beloved xbox360.
  • Not terribly useful but BA have a 24 hour cooling off period and you aren't allowed to 'hold' flights with them anymore. Not sure if this only applies to exec card members but I have used this several times. It's annoying you can't hold flights anymore though grrr!

I've always wanted to go to Scotland ... how lovely :) I think self catering would be really nice. You might find somewhere with a pool and games room or similar for kids without being somewhere like Butlins.

There is a caravan park at Wemyss Bay which is right next to the train station. From there you can catch a ferry over to the Isle of Bute, and it's only about half an hour from Glasgow City Centre. It's a nice quiet holiday park, and not far away either from Largs which is an old traditional seaside town which has a really good rainy day place called Vikingar. You could "do" Glasgow easily from there, and if you want to go to Edinburgh, you could do a few days at one then the other.

I would avoid Criag Tara, it's a bit wild, IMO

Here's a link to prices and availability w/c 18th October for four nughts, you could do Edinburgh Friday-Monday?

I have rung the holiday park - in Wemyss Bay - 6 person caravan - brand new caravan £323 with all cover.

The distance from the airport (Glasgow International) is 25.45 - there are 5 of us so we would have to get a black cab - I suppose we are looking at £40 for the black cab - or do you think it will be more on a Friday night at 9.30pm?
