Hey everyone ,

Tryin to find out somemore info ,my partner is due to goin for foot surgery (5 diff procedures including breaking all his toes) .The surgery has to happen on both feet ,and surgeon refuses to do both at once .therefore he will be out of work for 6mths.

The situation now is he will only get stat sick pay £280 per month ! and im a full time student ,my partner also pays child maintanence of £200 per month for his son .

I have sat down with the bills and we need to pay £900 in bills (including mortagage) and i only bring in 685 per month spoke to a benfits advisor today who said we are entitled to nothing ,can this be possibly true ?

im totally disgusted wot the hell do we pay our taxes for ? we were told that as we dont rent and have jobs we are eligeble for nothing ,basically if we were jobless and junkies wed be ok ,but because we work and pay our bills were not ,dnt know where to go from here ,im totally disgusted with this .

would also just like to point out that i as a full time student do not get any grants or bursaries ,all i recieve is a 25% reduction in my council tax

any advice ,anywhere else we should try ?

You should be entitled to student loans etc?
Re the maintanence, if you do it through the CSA you could contact them and tell them your new circumstances and they will take your lower income into account and reasses which should lower your payments. If its a private agreement then speak to the PWC and explain the situation.
  • my partner has a private agreement to pay the maintanence ,unfortunately his partner lives in dublin ,have already looked to see if this can be reduced ,however due to his ex partner having 4 children ,is not working ,and he is the only one of the four fathers paying anything this cant be reduced .lovely eh ?

as for student loan ,i already recieve this and makes up part of my income ,im in my final year of uni.

If its a private agreement then yes it can be changed, you are the one's paying it. I dont want to sound harsh but surly you and your partners needs are more important for the time being that 3 children that arent either of yours? Its not up to you 2 to pay for the other 3 children.

I had the same problem with my ex when he was very ill with lupus-we got very little help and I had to take on a second job so we could survive. After that I understood why so many people have insurance-unfortunately if you have an existing condtion like me and my ex the cost is too high even if you can find a policy willing to take you on.

Maybe you could speak to any debtors to reduce payments during this time, get a mortagage reduction/holiday whilst he is off work. Pick up any extra hours you can yourself and go onto the money saving threads to see how you can cut down-it's the only thing I can advise I'm afraid.
Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!
  • karen i completely agree with you but unfortunately my partner just doesnt see things quite this clearly. as he sees it he has a duty to his child. Even a reduction will not go far to sorting this situation anyway ,as would just allow us to cover bills ,with no money left for food or travel for me to work or uni .hope im not ranting here ,just having a total melt down over this ,cant believe because we have a mortgage and jobs were are left with no entitlement at all ,this country is a disgrace
  • hi suzy , thanks for the comments .again routes ive already gone down ,our mortgage company has refused to let us go interest only (this would have only saved £40 per month anyway .and u are right he couldnt get any insurance due to pre existing problems .and as for taking on a second job with uni and the job i have is just out of the question just couldnt fit it in ,unless i start taking speed (not being serious there)

I cant say I can understand your frustration as Iv not been in that situation but I can only imagine how tough things must be just now. Can you speak to your mortgage company and ask if you can switch to interest only for a few months? Or have a wee break? Also if you have any credit cards etc, I think they can freeze the interest for short periods.
You could offer his ex £100 per month? Will only be saving you £100 but every little helps just now!
  • .mortgage will not let us do anything ,we are with northern rock and at the moment are just as big a pain as everything else ,was going to rent and move in with family ,they have refused consent ,wont lets us go Interest Only and have advised us that we cant take payment holiday (this has been since the co. divided into 2) im so frustrated have never missed a mortgage payment in my life ,and dnt have any debt on credit cards .I suppose taking care of ourselves financially has gone against us no-one is willing to help us

you pay your taxes so people can get things like a council tax reduction, an education and single parents like your partners ex's benefits.
Your entitled to the same as anyone else in your circumstances.
If being a "druggy" or "jobless" gets you more money and a better life then just give up work and education and see how the other arf live.

Its not all its cracked up to be....
  • baza :a council tax reduction of 25% is wot i pay my taxes for ? well id save more if i just kept the money myself ! An education u say ,well i pay my own fee's and get a student loan which i pay back .and my partners ex is exactly the type of ppl that make me disgusted with this country ,however as shes not in the uk i cant say wot benefits she gets .And yes wot amounts to my frustration is ppl who take the absolutle mick out of the system get everything for free and complain about it .further to that i work for the nhs and am constant up against ppl refusing to go to hospital for self inflicted problems and having to arrange taxis (paid for by the government) to ferry them around .so no i have ABSOLUTLEY NO SYMPATHY FOR ANY OF THEM
