The Tommyknockers is the only Steven King I've ever read, I really didn't like it, even as a teenager I thought it was a bit kitsch and predictable, but I've heard a few times that it's not one of his best and I should try others. I've got the first Dark Tower one, but I can't read it yet cos then I'd need the others and that'd mean buying more books!
The Stephen Saylor ones sound interesting, right up my street. I bought a notebook this morning for all the recommendations, so I'll be putting them in there. Down in DT there's a thread about what people are reading and that's interesting too. I'm being strong though and not letting it lead me astray!
The Tommyknockers really isn't a book I would recommend to first time Stephen King readers. He has a lot of work that is much better - I like his stuff but can admit not everything he writes is great! My favourites are the Dark Tower series (you need to read it! I got most of the books from the library but did have to buy the last few) and Pet Sematary (daft title, great book). His short story collections are usually worth reading as well.
I got the first three in the Gordianus series by Steven Saylor for £5 from The Works. Quite a good deal really and the first books I'd bought for ages! I can read one in a day they're quite engrossing.Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts. Car loan 1 £11,174, Car loan 2 £5,532, CC 0% BT £780. On the subject of Stephen King (apologies to the delightful Ms Pickle for continuing to allow going off-topic), I really wish that I had never read "Low men in Long Yellow Coats" the first story in "Hearts in Atlantis". What happened to Brautigan? Where did he end up? etc etc .
From other readings, there is a link to the "Dark Tower" series, but I fear that if I started on these my life would be completely taken over by the workings of SK's mind.
By the way, the average movie-goer must have been perplexed by the movie "Hearts in Atlantis" (fine movie as it is) as there are no hearts and no Atlantis. This comes later on in subsequent stories (or novellas in the jargon) The movie suggests that Brautigan is an anti-government agent but the book suggests that he is a time-traveller.
I wish that that I knew the answer but I am just pleased that my mind is not that of Stephen King!."If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

I CONFESS - I bought a book yesterday
But it was in Oxfam so I've contributed something to the charity! It looks really interesting: Roberto Bolano's The Savage Detectives.
Almost finished reading Girl Friday by Jane Green so will probably try and finish Two Caravans next.My debt free diary | Post Office loan: £2131 1429.38 | Barclaycard: £4429 1988.12 | Paypal Credit £322.71 574.91 | Monzo Flex £169.03 |

It's still worth reading. I just didn't come away thinking -" I wish you were my friend" iyswim. I'd be interested to see what you think of it.:D0 -

I've had Two Caravans on my to-do-list for ages as I enjoyed A short history of tractors in Ukrainian so much. Have you read A Short History?
I'll be interested to see what you think of Two Caravans:)0 -
Finished "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time" and very good it was too.
I'm going to finish Dreams From my Father Barack Obama next. Amazingly, I got to page 358 in this book and it finishes at page 442 so it's almost completed!
I really can't believe how many unfinished books I have in my pile:rotfl:
Happy Reading0 -

I'm reading the 19th Wife by David Ebershoff and loving it, it's comparing two polygamous marriages a century and a half apart.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0

I've seen 19th wife in the shops and wondered whether it was worth reading.
Managed to go into two W bookshops today and wasn't tempted at all - don't know it its because I have so many unread, beacause I have a birthday coming up and have asked for books or because there weren't any good offers!0
