blindtoast, thanks for the recommendation for 'To Be A Cat':T. Sounds like the sort of thing I'd enjoy. Vowed NOT to buy books until I've read what I already have (and it's a torment sometimes:o). I'll see if it's in my local library. If not, I'm sure they can order it in from somewhere else.

    (

No problem, always happy to share what books I like - hopefully you'll enjoy it. It is aimed at children though I have really enjoyed it and I love the pictures in it - helps bring it all to life!

I generally get books from the library (To be a cat is from there), which is helping not to increase the number of books on my shelf but is not at all helping to decrease them! I try to alternate between library books and tbr books but I often take my finished book back to the library and find more that I want to read straight away!
No more buying books Books in 2016 = 20.
    Target for 2018 = 7/21
No more buying DVDs ? 2018 target 27/52

I could not resist buying "The Miniaturist" at the hospital - £ 1 and as good as new, so I can give it to a friend after I'm finished with it - and I can now take it of the longest waiting list ever in the library, lol.

We had this as a Bookclub choice and it had mixed review, although we all agreed well written

    Hello

I have been absent for quiet a few weeks been on holiday and we absorbed in latest book which took ages to read!

So while on holiday I finished

My life in Pieces by Simon Callow - hard work at times but if you love the theatre worth a read. Simon takes you through his life by introducing pieces he has published in newspapers theatre programmes etc...

Then as a respite a chick lit - Highland Fling by Katie Fforde - fairly amusing I was reading a setting in Scottish winter in the tropics of a trinidad!

Finally The Count of Monte Cristo - Alexander Dumas - as part of reading my way through the BBC top 100 list ! Would really reccomend as wellwritten and kept me enthralled til the end despite 117 chapters ,

Your holiday destination sounds wonderful, Bubblesmum:j

Is the BBC top 100 list the same shortlist for the BBC Big Read that they ran in 2003 or have they published an updated one?

During the original one in 2003 I managed to read 80 out of the 100, some being rereads of long-forgotten childhood books. Was quite pleased with myself and found some unexpected delights among the 'new' ones. My favourite, which I'm ashamed to say I'd never heard of until the list came out:o, was John Irving's Prayer for Owen Meany.

The few I didn't get round to were some of the big Russian novels (lack of time)and the sci-fi/fantasy ones. Must try to put that right maybe, although fantasy doesn't appeal.

Finished The Return of Sherlock Holmes, it was a collection of their various cases, rather than one long case, but it was still enjoyable.

Decided that since I have read the remaining books from last year's to be read list and made good progress on this year's reading list that I could start to allow myself to read books off my Goodreads 'Possible Reads' shelf, which includes a number of books I want to read but not purchase.

So I've borrowed from the library one called The Wedding Wallah, by Farahad Zama. It's the 3rd book from her series called The Marriage Bureau for Rich People. It's based in modern Indian which gives the book an interesting twist. I'm enjoying it so far and will probably have it finished by the end of the week if not sooner.

Just to let you know, blindtoast, that I've just collected my ordered copy of To Be A Cat. They didn't have it in at my nearest library but they said they'd get it and send it with the Mobile Library when it came to my village today. I love the library van and the staff on it, it's a godsend to avid readers like me who live so far from a library. Thankfully, although they've cut out some of the van's stopping points, the County Council has seen fit to keep letting it come to our village:j. Not sure how long it will last though as the users seem to get less all the time. Our rates are pretty high and we get so little for them, compared to urban dwellers, so the Mobile Library is a massive bonus when they are closing libraries all over the place.

The copy of the book they sent is brand new,I'm the first borrower, so another bonus IMO:rotfl:

I've had a few slips at the carboot recently and added to my bookshelves and then Dh said I could have the new Trisha Ashley (creature comforts) for my birthday and Amazon were doing an offer if you bought three, so cake shop in the garden and choc shoes and wedding blues fell in the basket as well.
Also got the game of life by Andy cope, so wagon has definitely been Fell off!
In my defence, I have just been through my pleasure reading bookcase and after seeing how many are on there I've been honest with myself nd 20 are going to the CS next time I go as I don't honestly think I'll get round to them as there's always somethingidprefer more.
I think I've spent most of the day redoing my goodreads books so sorry to anyone who is friends on there you are going to be getting a lot of updates from me.

Blind toast I hope you enjoy the first phone all from heaven, I thought it was really really good but then I think that about all of Mitch alboms books

Cracked on Sunday and bought my first new book in a long time. Bought GrAy Mountain by John Grisham. Have already started it, nearly a third of the way through it. Really enjoying his book. Will go back to Philippa Gregory is The King's curse once I have finished this book.

  • I've become quite a John Grisham fan too, Gem-gem. As he's so prolific it's always possible to find something by him at car boot sales etc for a few pence (my spending limit for any book at the moment). Have barely scratched the surface yet of everything he's written and with new ones coming out regularly I've years of treats ahead:j

I've been Reading John Grisham's books for years. So I am always very pleased to I see that he has written a new one. I used to go out and buy it in hardback now I wait until it comes out in paperback. I have kept all of his books. One day I will read them all again.
