Re new books, I can't stand breaking the spines on books and hate it when I lend books out and they are returned with the spines broken and NO WAY will I turn the page corners over - do I have a problem as well, charlies_mum?

    Hurrah, we're not alone!

I don't do it intentionally but 95% of my books are pristine - to the extent that my mum is too scared to borrow them! I think it's a lot to do with the fact I read quite quickly, so don't hold them open in one place for long. But equally I have a few favourites that a tatty and dog eared and tea stained and I love them!

Me too poddle - I have a really good friend who treats her books exactly the same as me and we swap and exchange books as we both have similar tastes. I'm very careful about who I lend books too now as I've learned over the years.... But like you, I have a few dog-eared favourites that I wouldn't part with for all the tea in China:D

I've read that, mrs-moneypenny, and really enjoyed it - hope you do too:D

I see we've been moved - I had to do a bit of hunting to find you all again, thought my new favourite thread had been spammed or something:eek:
:) The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time :)
  • We have a small mountain of books waiting to be read. My husband is genetically unable to pass a charity shop without popping in - and invariable reappearing with yet more books. Coupled with the local library it means that not a lot gets done in our house!!!!!!!!!! Some of them get read and kept, others get read and returned to our local hospice shop. Our granddaughter aged 3 1/2 is following in his footsteps - but at least its a good habit to have.
  • Can I join too :) I've got about 500 books I haven't read mostly given to me by a lovely freecycler

I've just finished Time Travellers Wife and loved it, wish it was longer!
Also just read Every Cockroach is beautiful in his Mother's Eyes by Angela Santo (Interesting title don't you think! :) ) Highly recommend it

Just joined mooch and having trouble trying to find audio books, even when going through the topic, 'audio books'

Well this post is kind of book related but also could go on the NSD thread. After pledging to have a NSD today, I found myself in the charity shop after work having a browse through the books at the back ;). I had already decided NOT to get anything and stick to my NSD :D, when a couple of guys came in and stole stuff out of the shop - YES a CHARITY shop! How low can you get? The girls in the shop were so upset as you can imagine and I heard them saying "there's no nice people left" . Well, I felt duty bound to prove them wrong and gave a couple of pounds for the charity anyway. I was a bit upset myself so ended up going for a cuppa, which, as the only available caff was St*rb*cks I had to get a 2nd mortgage to pay for it  - so the result is No More Book challenge 1-NSD Challenge nil

    Onwards and upwards!

you will always be rich enough to be generous.
  • That takes me back, jintyb.... does anyone else remember telex machines - my first job was in an export office and we had to type quotes on telex tape which would often end up being 12 feet long - the trick was trying to remember which end was the start when feeding it through the machine to send and which was the right way up - ahh, those were the days :rotfl:Sorry Pickle, totally off topic there:o

    .

I try really hard not to break the spine on books, but I find it difficult to read properly if the book is thick. I am a really fast reader so don't dwell on pages too long, but do find it difficult not to crease the spine, and then it just annoys me. My sister folds back books and it drives me nuts! My DS laughs at me when I grab random pieces of paper because I can't find my trusty bookmark.

Where have we moved to? I came back through my subscribed list but I don't like the thought of us not popping up on DFW of an evening :(.

I do that to... most of my "unread" books have been started at some point or another and then abandoned for a more gripping read. I love when I pick them up again and find receipts, cinema stubs, old birthday cards... you name it, wherever I was in the book when I got bored of it! Waiting on the day I find a £20 note in one :rotfl:.

A friend of mine did once find £20 in a book in a charity shop - she feels bad to this day that she bought it and kept the £20 instead of donating it. I tell her, at least she bought the book and didn't just take the money!

I'm tempted to buy Desperate Romantics: The Lives of the Pre-Raphaelites just for the picture of Aidan Turner on the front cover - this is silly for two reasons. One, I already know everything there is to know about them from my Art History degree, and two, I have the DVD of that and Being Human so no need to get this as well! Oh and three, I'm a happily engaged woman who doesn't need to be looking at pictures of hot Irish men....;)

Am off work today sick so could be catching up on my books but no, I have fallen in love with yet another actor and have decided to watch the entire series of Glee so far in one sitting. <3 Will Schuester even if he is very gullible...
