I have a confession to make, and wonder whether anyone else has this problem. When I have a new book, I can't bear to break the spine, friends hate to borrow books from me in case they do it.

Not at all... I do both of those things. They are perfectly acceptable.
The spine thing was completely reinforced when I worked in a book shop too (never made much money there - always had a shelf of books to buy by pay day!). We were allowed to borrow books as long as we didn't break the spine and the books were still in an as new, saleable condition when we returned them. If they weren't, then we had to buy them. Did any-one get the answer to this yet? Terry, you're going to have to put us out of our misery.
I had to give in and google it as I had never heard of him either. If anyone can't stand the suspense link is hereDebts at LBM - Mortgages £128497 - non mortgage £27497 Debt now £[STRIKE]114150[/STRIKE][STRIKE]109032[/STRIKE] 64300 (mortgage) Credit cards left 0

I received a Christmas card from a friend a while ago in which she reminded me she had my copy of 'Empty Cradles' by Margaret Humphreys. Its a really upsetting true story of the children who were shipped out of Liverpool to Australia whilst in care. My mum was on the Social Services Committee and helped the author gain access to records and is mentioned in the acknowledgements so I must get it back as its been out of print for years.Debts at LBM - Mortgages £128497 - non mortgage £27497 Debt now £[STRIKE]114150[/STRIKE][STRIKE]109032[/STRIKE] 64300 (mortgage) Credit cards left 0

Oh no, the first thing I do is break the spine, I like a book to be well-lovedI write notes and keep postcards and things in my travel books too
But I don't like turning the corner of a page over though!Weightloss: 14.5/65lb0 -

Oh, I wish I could do that, it is such hard work trying to read a book without opening it properly. You're only young once, but you can be immature forever0 -
Just a quickie, I posted earlier and have only just caught up with the thread.
For those who asked, the library does graphic novels too - my local has a really good collection, and they are very expensive to buy brand new. I've even got my brother reading them, and he hates reading. Philistine. Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....

I know! I left school in 1976 to work in an accounts office - we had to take turns if we wanted to use the amazing new invention - an electric adding machine! It was locked away every night because "it was very valuable" according to the boss, whom you had to address as Mr and we were all called by Miss or Mrs! Sorry, slightly off topic there!Hi everyone, I love reading, but I think my problem may be outside the scale of this challenge. I have at least 300 unread books in boxes in the shed, I don't actually know how many as I haven't been out in a while as I keep 30 books or so on my shelf inside. We're buying a house in a few months hopefully, and I don't even know where the 3000 or so books we have are going to go!Tete_en_l'Air wrote: »SS, as regards autobiographies, I didn't even enjoy Bill Bryson's one and I love love love all of his other books. Can't see OH getting into books like yours did unfortnately, he has this theory that he was never read bedtime stories and never read for pleasure as a child, so he doesn't like it now, which I think might have something to it - I was always reading as a kid. What do others think?
Re new books, I can't stand breaking the spines on books and hate it when I lend books out and they are returned with the spines broken and NO WAY will I turn the page corners over - do I have a problem as well, charlies_mum?
Well done Pickle for getting in the email, and for starting this thread, great place to hang out, have a gossip and exchange book ideas :j.The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time

I totally agree - I cannot bear the turning of the corners - it outs my teeth on edge! Also cant stand to see someone folding back a paperback, I also hate if someones written on a book, but worst of all are those bloomin stickers that bookshops put on ie 3 for 2, richard and judy bookclub etc - they never come off !!
Pickle - I know what you mean about reading everything - I read all the time - books, mags, MS threads etc but not necessarily in that order!
OK - Im off to get on with My Sisters Keeper - I WILL NOT GO ON AMAZON AND ORDER ANYTHING - NO I WONT!
you will always be rich enough to be generous.0
