Is it me? I can't find it :D

Anyway, who's brought the coffee? I have banana cake, and currently reading Douglas Adams 'Salmon of Doubt' which I'm not sure about.

*Snaffles banana cake and reads the blurb on back of book*

Yum! Right, I'll get the plates and knife...who else wants a slice?

What a fantastic thread! I am an avid reader with a fair few unread, and so many bookcases we've named our second public room The Library. Well, my teenagers did, and it stuck.

But I've a confession to make that may have me shunned in this bibliophile thread.

During the really cold weather in January, we ran out of coal for our multi-fuel stove, and we had a couple of boxes of books (really trashy ones in the main) that we had put aside for charity shops. That in itself had been a difficult experience, as both DH and myself do like to have shelves of books around, as well as to be always reading. But we had got to the stage of realising that to get the other half of the collection out of boxes, we'd have to ditch some.

Then we heard on the news about little old ladies buying cheap books in charity shops to burn on the fire.

So we did. I can tell you that paperbacks burn great, hardbacks aren't worth the effort. To get the fire going, fan the pages out a bit before you put the book on. For a slower burn, put it on straight from the shelf.

I know it sounds like something from 1940s Germany (just read The Book Thief - recommended). And it did feel almost like a political act. But we live in a remote area and couldn't find coal within 10 miles....

    I'll get my coat.....

You could consider this to be a perfectly good deed, you are saving other people from reading those books and wasting their time on sub prime literature.

I'm reading 'Not buying it' at the moment, which is a departure from my usual fiction which I love, and its not easy going, like a condensed economics and social theory text book every night. I'm really looking forward to getting back to something more fun.

I have an issue regarding the net gain of books - I get sent 4 free every month as a reviewer for Amazon Vine, and I can't turn down free books, so to beat my to read pile I need to be reading these plus some of my stockpile, which is quite a challenge!

Last year we went on holiday to Egypt for two weeks and we had one suitcase for clothes and one for books. Between us we took 21 books for a 2 week holiday!

I think it woud be fair to say that you have to be a real DNA fan to appreciate this book. If you can get hold of the audio book it is a whole lot easier to get into.

I am a book addict.I love to be surrounded by real books and rarely get rid of any. I have been promising myself ( I lie, I have been promising my wife) that I will not buy any more books until I've read all the ones I've got. Then I see something at a boot sale that I just have to have and before I know it I'm smuggling another 10 books up to my man-cave in the loft. I had a clear out last year and gave all my really really old books to a friend who has more room than I do, but somehow the empty spaces have all been filled. I have about 2000 books and of these I have 142 unread. I will get round to them eventually, but I always seem to fiind a new book by an author I like, just as I am about to read one of them. The internet doesn't help, as I found three new Jeffey Deavers and three re-printed Robert A Heinleins last time I looked, though these were birthday presents from my wife and kids, so it doesn't count. If I keep telling myself this, it will become true.:D

Currently reading Tony Hancock's biography, Laurel and Hardy from the Forties Onward, and listening to The Time -Traveller's Wife on audio book in the car.

Every time I look it appears like there's a new Jeffrey Deavers out, but I do like them.

Ooh I am a monkey for doing this! There are definitely more unread books in my house than read ones! Thanks for this thread Pickle.

I used to just get drawn in by new releases, snazzy covers and 3 for 2 offers or charity shop finds! I have to say that since my LBM I haven’t bought any but I haven’t got round to reading many either! I am a sucker for fashion magazines and as I am not buying any clothes, shoes, bags etc this year (I’m sure that there’s a thread for me out there somewhere *makes mental note to find it!*) I see them as my ‘cheap’ shopping fix but I realise that I have a wealth of reading material that I should get my teeth into! Plus my OH is a book worm and hoards the books he’s read, so not only have I got my own unread books, I have access to his too.

So I definitely WILL NOT buy any books until I have read all of my already owned ones. I will also attempt to wean myself off the magazines :o

Sounds great, I've just reserved it at the library!

My problem on my train to work is my iPod touch - I have a program that can convert downloaded TV programmes to iPod programmes, so at the moment I'm watching series 8 of 24 to and from work! Must try and start reading again. I have 10 minutes left of this episode so will allo myself to watch that and then pick up Two Caravans again.

  • i finally bit the bullet and did 'the count' last night, i took out any non fiction books that i wouldn't really 'read' such as travel guides (although they are all well thumbed) and coffee table glossies so after that i have 451 books, of which 371 remain unread !eek! my oh suggested i try two years with buying no books, i suggested he find another wife :) i love my books and they are so much a part of me. every1 in my family knows that if they want to buy me a handbag for birthday/christmas i don't care about the brand or colour, it just HAS to be big enough to fit a book it...maybe two!
  • Just been to Mr A and resisted the temptation. They have got loads of classics for £1 each, Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights,Journey to the centre of the Earth and others I can't remember the names of.

I'm giving up on Inspector Alan Grant - I know he's in a series of detective novels but no idea which one. Sounds like a good read though, so will look it up if you tell us which one:DQUOTE]

Did any-one get the answer to this yet? Terry, you're going to have to put us out of our misery :D.

I love reading, but I think my problem may be outside the scale of this challenge. I have at least 300 unread books in boxes in the shed, I don't actually know how many as I haven't been out in a while as I keep 30 books or so on my shelf inside. We're buying a house in a few months hopefully, and I don't even know where the 3000 or so books we have are going to go!

Then you'll fit right in :D Welcome aboard!
Well I was telling my friend about my book challenge last night and she said "Oh, I've still got loads of your books that you lent me...

Congrats Pickle on getting in the email! :T
If I had been given back all of the books I'd loaned out, I'd need a bigger flat! Most annoying though, was loaning many of my uni books to my flat-mate's girlfriend (I was studying English Studies at the time)... then they split up and I never saw her again .

Oh no. wait, worse... loaned out a book I'd only just bought as I knew I had a long "to read" list... and I've never seen the book since. That was over 5 years ago! That'll teach me! So I am now also "funny" about loaning books I haven't yet read!

And well done Pickle :j:j On the email, woo hoo! Virtual hobnobs all round :T
