@inapickle Follow your heart whether for pleasure or for College, that way is happiness with books. Then once you have isolated what you want, just make a devious plan to nab it at the lowest possible price.(for academic texts the cheapest you can go and get all the info you need as academic texts are always updated especially if they are seminal texts).#TY[/B] Would be Qaulity MSE Challenge Queen.

hattifattener - where is this list of 1001 books to read before you die? I'd probably try to read them in order too, otherwise I wouldn't know where to start!
It's a book. It's been on my bookshelf for years - 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die. It has a little blurb and picture about each one. Unfortunately I don't have the most up to date copy, so my list is a little out of date, but we live with that. :rotfl: I think you can get a list of the titles if you google.MFW start date:22.6.13 - £138555 9.7.13 - £125937

Thanks hattifattener I'll look that up
Has anyone read The Book of Human Skin? I'm about 100 pages in and not sure if I like it. It's well written and I want to find out what happens but I'm finding it pretty depressing. It might be that's just how I'm feeling at the moment so I wondered what other people felt about the book?

Yes please. I seriously need to stop buying more books, two from W.H.S and 4 from Bookworks only this week. Sale on at Bookworks and book voucer a buy one, second half price at W.H.S. These were recipe books for inspiration to do more home cooking, A grow your own book and two walking books, ideas for walking locally and with my dog. These are supposed to count to my overall save, honest. If I save by doing activities like walking instead of more expensive past time so hope thats allowed.
Anyway I have tons of books still to be read, my conservatory has turned into an accidental library and i have baskets and cupboard full of them so this challenge if i keep to it should prevent me from spending for a year:T:T:T0 -

@inapickle Academic Books are good for you. Now I have a 1,470 pager to read 'The Critical Tradition, Classic Texts and Contemporary Trend's'David Richter (Yale Open Literary Theory Class) and I would be very bad indeed not to use it. So this year God helping I read the whole thing from cover to cover. (After that effort 600 pagers will seem a doddle or at least less onerous).
Academic Books can give you what no other type of book can give you: a thirst for knowledge, a desire to set your own questions (essential for Research Component of Degree which is mandatory), KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON!!!!!!! and even if to you and everyone on this site I look !!!!lessly extravagant at my crazy desire to buy these books, such books will help you more-than other books you could buy- because you will gain in ways you cannot imagine.
(Academic books tend to lead to other Authors Theorists etc so it is a journey but a journey I for one would rather be going on like the working class people of old who in their factories etc expounded Plato etc etc and became Professors Writers etc (Jonathan Rose 'The Intellectual Life of the Working Classes' yale Highly recommended for all on MSE.#TY[/B] Would be Qaulity MSE Challenge Queen.

@webzyoo I am forcing myself NOT to browse Amazon as the naughty? site apparently is making nicer reductions ie £2 on some fantastic academic non common volumes!!??
From my point of view only by cutting back and at least holding back for as long as possible can I rein in the spending part of me, whilst aiming to nab that ragely un-common outstanding academic text, a real corker at nice low price...#TY[/B] Would be Qaulity MSE Challenge Queen.

So I finished 'The dig' by John Preston last night. It is based on the findings at Sutton Hoo in 1939. I did like the story which was more about the character relationships than the actual dig, until about 3/4 of the way through and then it just seemed to miss a chunk out - what of I'm not sure but it just felt like there was a bit of the story missing? My friend who also read the book said it was like the author got bored with the story and just wanted to finish it! However saying that I did like it and it was only short so a nice little read.
Haven't decided what I'll read next...Challenge savings 2010-2016 £1564.60:j
