'No More Buying Books Until I've Read the Ones I've Already Bought' Thread

I had a successful 2011 in that I didn't actually buy any physical books - but over 60 came into the house - either sent to me to review, competition wins or freebies. I currently have a growing pile of around 40 to go to a charity book stall in June for a local charity's open day. I'm hoping to get through loads more by then so I can get rid of even more.
I have bought myself a fair few Kindle books - but all either via vouchers given as gifts or earned through doing surveys, and most have been 99p sale ones. I've accumulated some free ones as well.
I got lots of books for Christmas as my lovely husband has been buying anything he thinks I'd like in Poundland for the past few months and stashing them away for Christmas. You can get some really good ones if you're there at the right time.
My 2012 challenge is to watch less TV and read more - I've definitely got into bad habits over the Christmas period. I'm aiming to read at least 50 books this year - a few years ago I was reading more than twice that, but life has got in the way somewhat!
I'll probably be able to get through more books than usual this year because of all the sport on TV - the Olympics and the Euro football championships to name but two!
I'm just finishing Dickens' A Christmas Carol on the Kindle and also have a couple of other novels on the go - Skin and Bones a crime novel and Season of Light a historical novel about a young English woman caught up in the aftermath of the French revolution.0 -
Have just finished the second book in the Fire and Ice series (Game of Thrones was on TV) and I am gagging for the others.....must resist temptation....
Have LOTS of Shakespeare on my Kindle app and I need to stop buying books. I also got Stieg Larsson's books for Christmas so they're next on the list** Total debt: £6950.82 ± May NSDs 1/10 **** Fat Bum Shrinking: -7/56lbs **
**SPC 2012 #1498 -£152 and 1499 ***
I do it all because I'm scared.

@SueMaggie I totally agree with you over the TV issue. So much of it's just repeats where one is mesmerized into watching the next repeat and so on. For some reason the TV has too much hold on me despite my efforts to avoid the pesky ads which only cheapen the experience.
Hopefully I can get a nice little reading and radio addiction with TV firmly set in it's place.
just nab the good programmes, listen to some qaulity radio then attack most of all beautiful wonderful unique fresh books!!#TY[/B] Would be Qaulity MSE Challenge Queen.

Ooh, you guys are inspiring me to watch less TV, too (having said that it's currently on in the background...hmm...a theme oerhaps?!) I need to make a point of keeping it off as much as possible...particularly given how many CDs I need to listen to! :rotfl:Please call me 'Pickle'

I almost always have the TV on in the background while I'm pottering around the house but hardly ever actually watch it.
Need to sit down and reorganise the bookshelves, the pet bless him unpacked all the books and has mixed them up, have reclaimed my two shelves separately to his books but need to sort which ones are unread. Left the Kindle on over night to finish downloading everything I've ordered lately and have ended up with 5000+ titles....somehow I don't think I'll ever get through all of those but I do know that there are a fairly high number of ebooks that I've got as 'real' books on there so will delete those as I find them (unless the physical books are on the unread list). It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

Do what is comfortable to you so long as one is reading and conversely able to do what one should do, I think one needs to gaurd against being swept away by it's mesmerizing disappointing processes.#TY[/B] Would be Qaulity MSE Challenge Queen.

Happy New Year everyone!
I appear to have gone slightly backwards over the Christmas break - I have bought and been given lots of books - which is great - but not very good for my target or this challenge!!
Now I'm back at work though, I will try to get back on track. Have almost finished the book i was reading before Christmas now and then I think The Hunger Games will be next. Saw the trailer for the film at the weekend and it looks brilliant but would like to have read the book before i watch the film.
I might try your way this year Pickle and choose a target to be read by next year - perhaps 30 - and then also have my overall target (which has gone up but I haven't worked out how many by yet)!!
One of the books I did buy (for a bargain due to Waterstones half price sale and a forgotten gift voucher I found at the bottom of my bag!) was Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick (the man who wrote Hugo Cabret) and I am very pleased with my purchase - it is written half in words and half in pictures and is beautiful! No more buying books Books in 2016 = 20.
Target for 2018 = 7/21
No more buying DVDs ? 2018 target 27/52

I'm going to aim to read 50 books in 2012
I've already read two, so I'm off to a good start
I'm in the middle of reading One Day which is really good so far! Got another 4 in the pile to read first, before I get any more library books out!
