  • Spendless it appears to be around the same price give or take a few pennies but the companies are allowed to give offers on the follow on milks so it can work out cheaper. I always used them with the other two i dont think there is much need to if they have a good diet but it did guarentee their iron intake supposedly :-)

Did anybody watch Panaorama last week?

Apparantly follow on milk is all a big gimic! Yes it does contain a lot more iron than cows milk but the extra iron is not needed if the baby has a healthy diet. Cows milk is much healthier in these circumstances.
  • The last time I bought baby milk was back in 2003 and used to buy it from the baby clinic as it was much cheaper than the stores, by a couple of pound if i rememeber right. Am preg with baby number 3 and want to BF but if I can't for whatever reason it will be FF. When I was in Tesco the other day I happened to go down the baby aisle and noticed the price of baby milk I was horrified it was so dear, £8 for aptimil. I just can't believe it is so dear especially when it s an essential!!!

I'm only 50% sure on this but I think that was toddler milk (from 12 months), not follow on milk (from 6 months). So cows milk can't be an alternative to follow on milk.

As I say, not sure now, so might be wrong and the programme was follow on milk not toddlers milk.

Morning all, Thanks MrsTine for starting new thread, I was looking forward to contributing to the other one alot but got a bit fed up with some of the comments towards FF mums....they seem to forget that we are all individials and make our own choices - accept it.

Anyway back on topic - Aptamil seems still at £7.90 in Asda and Boots at the moment according to website.

Just been to drs for LOs jabs and she has suggested he might need Hungry baby milk (even though bit early) as only going 2½ - 3hours sometimes between feeds and only wants 5 ozs and no more at mo.... anyone else swap early to this at all... I'm sure Henry was another month or so older before I changed him?

  • Just wanted to say that in my local LIDL's 2 weeks ago they were selling tins of Heinz Nurture stage 2 (hungry baby) milk for less than £6 a tin (regular size).

This is the cheapest formula milk i have seen in the shops and seems very good value to me. Not sure if the price is available in all LIDL's nationwide though.

Hope this is helpful for someone looking to save money on formula milk.

Thanks Jillie, its weird sometimes he will go 4 hours - like now (need to wake him in a min for a feed) last one was at 9ish, then at night time its like 8, 10.30, 12.30! Will ask HV tomorrow as need to get a tub by then...Nurde also suggested water when its such close feeding but I thought they didnt recommend that now, mind you my mum is always saying maybe he's thirsty..

Well my son was breastfed until 7 months and then he went onto Farleys at about £5 a tin. My daughter was breastfed until 4 months, and then I put her on Cow and Gate at about £7 a tin. There is 3-years age difference between them, so a £2 price hike is quite steep.

However, I understand the reasons for keeping the price high, and I do think that all mothers should be encouraged (in a positive way) to breastfeed wherever possible. I was given a decent amount of support from midwives, health visitors and breastfeeding clinics, but it *is* tough and I nearly gave up with my daughter after about three weeks. After my experiences, I'd never look down on a mother who decided, after giving breastfeeding a decent chance, that formula feeding was best for her and her baby.
