I think the thread is a great idea, and a wonderful use of Lenten discipline but please remember, chickens like dogs, are not just for Lent/Christmas. I really worry about welfare of chickens with the current resurgence in chicken keeping. There are few threads where some one has come home with hens from Pets at Home or similar and has done little research. Keeping hens is NOT rocket science but it IS a commitment that needs to be entered in to every bit as carefully as other pets in a home situation. Its a rewarding hobby, and now is a good time of year to start BUT please, please think about the implications of cost, daily routine etc as well as the fresh eggs and dear birds. This isn't meant to put people off (I breed and sometimes sell chickens!) but it is to ask people to really think about it and the commitment it takes to keep back yard hens happier than farmed birds is significant..

Hi, I would love to take part again this year. Last year I made a rag rug but this year I have decided to make knitted cushion covers like the ones that are £35 in the Laura Ashley catalogue. They will be knit in double knit yarn as I can buy it really cheaply from our local Age Concern shop.

Brilliant idea but I have no idea what to try! I don't want to take up some new craft, I don't have any equipment or much time :(

Not sure about a new skill - I have far too many unfinished projects (knitting, sewing and crotcheting) already in hand!
So, the answer's obvious really isn't it? For the six weeks of Lent I will set aside one hour of every day to work on these. I shall start with sewing up the crotchet squares on the blanket I'm doing for DGD's bed and also the jumper I'm knitting for me. ( I need to have a change every so often! I could, realistically finish both!) Finding an hour is really quite easy - just means cutting out an hour on the laptop.
Hey - that's good - I'm both cutting out something for Lent AND doing something extra!! Thanks Penpen!

Meant to add, knitting in the round is really easy once you get in the swing. Old sets used to have 5 needles ( lots of mine have). Makes it easier, 4 with stitches on and 1 working needle, not so much of a stretch for smaller items.

Thank you :A Have you a favourite pattern, Churchie ? I'm going to start with the ones in Rikki's link, then see how I get on :)

    Love your sig, btw :rotfl:

How about baking bread? I started sourdough at Christmas time, and it's even easier than making bread from scratch :T

  • I agree with beemuzed ;) I have loads of unfinished knitting jobs on the go.... squares blanket, cinderella topsy turvey doll, westie and little furry mice. I'm going to commit for an hour a day and hopefully get some finished :D
Squares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )
Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)

I only bake bread occasionally as I don't use the oven much- maybe for 15-20 mins 2-3 times a week?
    Hmm i'll keep thinking!
