Boo to Eurostar!

I've never understood this mentality. Where do you end your argument? Should we all stop haggling, in case it deprives a company of profits that could be used to reduce fares for other people? Or perhaps we should all stop using carrier bags - not because it's harmful for the environment - but because it adds 0.0002p to the cost of the average shop for everyone else.
My individual contribution to Eurostar raising YOUR ticket price is mathematically insignificant.
Often, there is no cause and effect. Quite the contrary: my good experience here has made me more likely to book Eurostar in the future, thereby contributing to the company's profit and reducing the fares you pay.
I'd remind you what the very purpose of MoneySavingExpert is - to stop people paying too much and to help them save money! That's doesn't mean scrimp and scrape on things like proposing, but just not paying over the odds and trying to get the most out of every transaction that you can. If you disagree with people trying to ask for freebies (which actually I think were deserved) then surely you disagree with the very premise on which this site is built?
I don't really understand the rudeness from some of the people on this thread. Some have accused me of being a cheapskate just for asking for an upgrade! That's not called being a cheapskate - it's called using your initiative! Or, rather, it's 'more fool you' for putting up with bad service! It's not as if I'm trying to blag a free holiday, free ring, free dinner etc. I can assure you that I've done everything by the book...but took this opportunity to make a special trip even more special. It might have been 'pushing my luck'...but it worked!
I think it's more of a case of if they do something for one person then it should be done for all. Then fares really would go up!0 -

Yes, thankfully not everybody expects something for nothing.0 -

I don't. I paid money to Eurostar to take me on holiday. They didn't take me. So, I expect 'something' for the inconvenience. They delivered. Case closed.0 -
Well done bunglejemson. Not sure if some of the contributors just have problems reading or if it comprehension that is the issue.

But then theres all the others who consider their situation/problem as needing 'something' for 'some' inconvenience. Then it ends up like a tax again. It's the fact that some people always need 'something' for any inconvenience they come across that a lot of people don't like. Many percieve it as greed, which I think it's hard to argue it isn't.0 -

Perhaps he'll ask Eurostar to compensate him for the inconvenience...

Read your own posts. You are expecting something for nothing.0 -

No...YOU read my posts and you will see I was asking that instead of compensation I would rather be upgraded. And that's what happened in the end. Which bit of this don't you understand?
People can be so bitter on these forums sometimes. Please do continue sitting back and enjoying poor service - those of us who fight for more from the companies they deal with won't feel guilty.0 -

It's a fair point, but you need to differentiate between those who have suffered loss and those who haven't when you make arguments like that.
Have you read 'Sour Gripes'? It's a good book - you'd like it (I think).
If your train is delayed, then - to borrow a quote - !!!! happens. Big deal. Whoopy doo.
But if your train is delayed and you end up suffering a loss because of it then it's a very different matter, surely?
I completely agree with you that often people do try to get something for nothing. But when an individual is at a loss because of a company's actions, they should be entitled to something. What's unfair about that? Disappointment can be a loss, provided it's fair disappointment. e.g. I'm not disappointed that my train into work this morning was a few minutes late, but I could be reasonably disappointed if it was delayed for two hours.0
