Boo to Eurostar!

I was due to take my girlfriend to Disneyland Paris by Eurostar just before Christmas. Aside from it being my birthday, I was going to propose to her (had the ring, occasion all ready).

The snow put stop to that and our trip was cancelled.

I managed to rearrange it through lastminute.com and so we're now going this weekend for Valentines' Day, where I'm going to try popping the question for the 2nd attempt!

I'm not fussed about compensation from Eurostar, but I phoned them hoping they might be able to make our trip a little bit special, given that our first trip was cancelled because of them. We lost out too - tickets to shows were cancelled, our hotel etc...so I thought they might show a bit of good cheer and do something small for us, whether that's an upgrade on the way back or even just something little like a glass of champagne.

Unfortunately, 'computer says no' attitude prevails and they say they can't do upgrades and they don't sell champagne. Whatever happened to the French being romantic!

So, well done Eurostar for the way you've treated us as customers. Not only did we have our first trip cancelled, but when we politely contact you to see if you'd like to remedy the situation you don't even have the capacity to do so.

Also...I had to wait 23 minutes on hold before I spoke to a Customer Service advisor.

    Eurostar = rubbish :(

    Surely you are not real!
How was it Eurostar's fault that it snowed?

I thought Mickey Mouse was already at Disney Land but it appears he doesn't get there until February 14th.

The problem was due to the snow membranes of the Eurostar trains which were poorly designed to allow fine snow penetrate. It was not a case of it being just because it snowed.

Did you not read the news? The weather was unpredictably bad. Worst for 35 years.

If every 35 years Eurostar have a problem whereby people are inconvenienced by a day or so, then great.

    NOBODY DIED!!!!

I did read the news thank you, i read about how the trains failed not because of the amount of snow (what you seem to believe), but because it was "the wrong type of snow". The membranes that they spent so much money on failed as the snow was too fine which they admit was a design flaw on their part.

This thrad isn't talking about legal rights, but rather providing good customer services. Its good that they finally offered something, but it was a struggle for the OP.

    Yes, presumably by you personally?

I've never understood this mentality. Where do you end your argument? Should we all stop haggling, in case it deprives a company of profits that could be used to reduce fares for other people? Or perhaps we should all stop using carrier bags - not because it's harmful for the environment - but because it adds 0.0002p to the cost of the average shop for everyone else.

My individual contribution to Eurostar raising YOUR ticket price is mathematically insignificant.

Often, there is no cause and effect. Quite the contrary: my good experience here has made me more likely to book Eurostar in the future, thereby contributing to the company's profit and reducing the fares you pay.

I'd remind you what the very purpose of MoneySavingExpert is - to stop people paying too much and to help them save money! That's doesn't mean scrimp and scrape on things like proposing, but just not paying over the odds and trying to get the most out of every transaction that you can. If you disagree with people trying to ask for freebies (which actually I think were deserved) then surely you disagree with the very premise on which this site is built?

I don't really understand the rudeness from some of the people on this thread. Some have accused me of being a cheapskate just for asking for an upgrade! That's not called being a cheapskate - it's called using your initiative! Or, rather, it's 'more fool you' for putting up with bad service! It's not as if I'm trying to blag a free holiday, free ring, free dinner etc. I can assure you that I've done everything by the book...but took this opportunity to make a special trip even more special. It might have been 'pushing my luck'...but it worked!
