OK.. I have a question for the general populace of the thread....
Who still sterilises their baby's bottles at 6 months?? (looking around for those who glance up and say "sterilise??" LOL)
I am fast becoming tired of sterilising DS3's bottles. I personally think a good wash with hot soapy water and a rinse with hot water is sufficient. He puts his toys on the floor and in his mouth and all sorts - is sterilising the bottles REALLY going to make a big difference at this point? His little immune system should be up to the challenge now, right??
Not me, I've not sterilised his bottles from 6 months, and never sterilised anything else at all, bowls spoons etc. Our local HV's say not to bother once they can move around on the floor putting all sorts of things in their mouths.0 -

I'm a bad mummy because:
I've let my children suck their thumbs
Sometimes I turn the monitor off if I hear them crying so I can get another hour or so sleep
Some times the t.v is on all day
I go to mother and toddler groups and chat to my friends instead of sitting on the floor playing with my dd
If I'm reading a book to my dd I'll skip paragraphs to get through it quicker (she's just starting to get wise to this now and tells me i've missed bits)
At 2 years old I send them to nursery 2 mornings per week - even though there's no need for them to go.
This list could go on and on and on....0 -
I think this depends on if you are making up milk in advance. If you are making up a fresh bottle then I don't think it is neccessary. If you are making milk up in advance then I think you should remember it may not be sterile. I used to pour boiling water over some things [teaspoons, dummies] if I couldn't be bothered to do the whole sterilising routine. Also some dishwashers sort of sterilise though I don't know much about this as I never had one.
Well, I make the bottles up in the morning, but with water I've just boiled. Maybe I'm being a bit blonde, but I don't see what method used for making up the bottles has to do with whether or not I sterilise the bottles themselves.... ?MSE mum of DS(7), and DS(4) (and 2 adult DCs as well!)DFW Long haul supporters No 210:snow_grin Christmas 2013 is coming soon!!! :xmastree:0 -

...........did you do this to avoid natural childbirth . If you dont go through labour listening to whale music with a birthing pool, scented candles, a bean bag and no painkillers you really are a bad mummy:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
I had one shot of morphine with my 1st and NOTHING with my 2nd...Not my choice...I wanted to be a bad mummy dosed up to the eyeballs on morphine!
I couldn't do the whole whale music thing, giving birth is bloody painful and the last thing you'd want is to get pis$ed off by a bunch of ooooeeee noises in the background then getting set on fire because the massage oil caught fire from the flame of the candle!Started PADdin' 13/04/09 paid £7486.66 - CC free 02/11/10

Well, to be perfectly honest, I normally wouldn't. I didn't with my oldest, as we were in the states, and it just wasn't done. You sterilised the bottles before the first use, then just washed them in hot soapy water after using. But I was told in no uncertain terms here that I was risking their life by not sterilising (aren't HVs great? *sigh*). I personally feel it's no longer necessary, but I was wondering what the general consensus here was.MSE mum of DS(7), and DS(4) (and 2 adult DCs as well!)DFW Long haul supporters No 210:snow_grin Christmas 2013 is coming soon!!! :xmastree:0 -
As soon as they're are crawling around on the floor I stop steralising as they're then putting anything and everything in their mouths anyway.0

I stopped sterilising when both the girls were 6 months and will do again with ds, as you said if they can put things in their mouth that have been on the floor at that age then what harm is a freshly washed bottle going to do as long as it is rinsed after washing?
Its a waste of time sterilising after 6months0
