  • Hehe, I was too excited to write up my discoveries whilst it was fresh, and then I had to calculate how much things would be using the smart price stuff, things like oats in my house come from a big container, had no idea how much they would be!

And what are your excuses :)

I just did the Risi e bisi survey there... that does look quite interesting, I love stuff like that.
I think I may try that soon... leaving out the bacon and subbing the chicken stock for veg stock, to make it veggie friendly ;)

So costing sian's burgers from shirley's stock then (it's spot on sian, only the HM bread to add in :))... (I'm in Bold)

    250g pork mince - 97.5p
    150g cooking bacon- 33.9p
    100g oats- 5.8p
    120g breadcrumbs- 2 slices HM bread 3.4 p
    1 egg- 9.9p
    Salt and pepper
Oil- I used some of this to cook the burgers in as they were sticking, about 15 ml I think - 1.3p
    320g onion- 12.5p
320g apple- Afraid I am not sure how much per apple... eek- gonna say 50p, though this may be a bit high nope, spot on (not sure about allowing for wastage :))
    1 stock cube- 4p

So, for the double mixture that is 2.25 meaning for a meal for 4 it is £1.13 for the burgers and the apple and onion sauce £1.09 with HM bread, a staggering 27.3p per portion :T:T:T:T:T

I served half the mixture with
    Carrots, chopped- 17.3
Potatoes (boiled then roasted!)- 1kg- 27.2
Let's imagine I used broccoli...- 30.1p (actually got parsnips, on offer but still too much for Shirl... :( )

Looking at the meal planner I think shirley would go with your spuds, but use 80g peas per person in lieu of the broccoli

74.6p for accompaniments meaning total of £1.88 for 4 meals :)
£183.6 with HM bread or 45.9p per meal :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I'm soooooooo pleased sian :) thank you.

Feel a bit guilty about the extra food you've bought!:o Sian's storecupboard challenge anyone?:D

    xxxx

chatted to DH last night about the challenge, a couple of thoughts for our lovely team here to be passed on from the great man.

    1. Weezl people will interpret your fervour and mad posting times as meaning that the project must proceed at a very fast pace. This may cause some to give more to it than they can/should and others to perhaps see it as a bit frantic and drop out.

Good point! I hadn't realised, but of course I do see that some of you may feel pressure, and have asked very cute questions like 'is it ok if I can't do x thing for a few days' :):o:D My response: Of course it is, no rush at all! I am just very blimmin grateful any of you want to play my mad game, and there is no timescale as I see it.

I'm afraid the frenetic pace is more about my personal circs.

If when Kester comes, all is not well or I am suddenly very limited, I would love this project to still have legs. I think it is very valuable. As such I am putting the effort I have now into the bits I feel are down to me, believing that if I post it all, then any of you who wanted to could make this run without me.

And on a much more hopeful front: A wacky little advanced invite for all of you:

One of my 'get through labour and the early days of new mummyhood' strategies is to look forward to a treat that is for me.

I saw that the imperial war museum have an exhibition running now til next january about the wartime ministry of food. I am very interested. The ministry of food had a mandate to help britain do subsistance living healthily under impoverished conditions.

We have been enjoying our own little ministry of food project together.

And so, If one saturday probably Novemberish of this year, any of you fancies a London saturday afternoon meet up at the Imperial War museum, London, to look round and to say hello to a Weezl, Acetate Monkey, Kester and Fergus, it would be absolutely grand to meet you :)
