apple curd- please calculate the whole batch, I'm not sure of portions yet, I think it's 30g
baked bean curry 4 portions with 100g rice per person
    cereal bar makes 32 portions

    :) Many thanks :D:T

potential ingredients for risotto pescatore/ Con Le Sarde

    400g rice 29.2p
1 can glenryck pilchards in tomato sauce 65p
    320g onion 13p
    45 ml Oil, 4p
    garlic,
    spoon of pesto 6p
    Salt and pepper

Aim to make 4 generous portions, there is no veggie side dish with this meal..... :)

Anyone willing to give it a go?

As long as you can wait a couple of days? I have a stock of tinned pilchards but nobody to share the experiments with. :o I have two portions of savoury bread and butter pudding with my name on, a frugal staple from the year of my marriage (1995) when I worked in a factory and HTB was a PhD student. Not very frugal at all these days, containing shop bought bread, milk, (free range) eggs AND cheese.

Hello! A couple of volunteers required for some calorie counting of some of the recipes, is anyone interested?

I think using the tool provided by recipecal would be the most helpful, I'll explain more when I've seen who's up for it :)

I think I'd aim to give each person no more than 3 recipes to calculate cos it takes about 10 mins each recipe so that'd seem a bit much ;):D

I may happen to be unemployed at present and therefore may happen to have a good deal more than ten minutes to spend on a very interesting and worthwhile project. :D Oh and I may happen to have drunk the best part of a bottle of wine with a dear friend this evening so please excuse silliness.

  • Hey all! Very excited as did my first proper test of the recipes. So, the pork and apple burgers, this is what I used to make double the recipe...

250g pork mince - 97.5p- noted that turkey mince is cheaper...
    150g cooking bacon- 33.9p
    100g oats- 5.8p
120g breadcrumbs- 10p -would be less for Shirley as she has her own bread to use!
1 egg- 9.9p (mine was free range from pack of 15 at 16.7p, think the egg is necessary with all the additional dry ingredients)
    Salt and pepper
Oil- I used some of this to cook the burgers in as they were sticking, about 15 ml I think - 1.3p
    320g onion- 12.5p
320g apple- Afraid I am not sure how much per apple... eek- gonna say 50p, though this may be a bit high
1 stock cube- 4p I added this to my apple and onion sauce along with a spoon of sugar, sure it is optional but I thought it might make it more gravy like

So, for the double mixture that is 2.25 meaning for a meal for 4 it is £1.13 for the burgers and the apple and onion sauce

I served half the mixture with
    Carrots, chopped- 17.3
Potatoes (boiled then roasted!)- 1kg- 27.2
Let's imagine I used broccoli...- 30.1p (actually got parsnips, on offer but still too much for Shirl... :( )

74.6p for accompaniments meaning total of £1.88 for 4 meals :)

So, my method for making it all first... If you didn't have a food processor this would be a massive faff!

    1) Whizz up bread to make crumbs, remove from mixer
    2) Whizz up apple and onion, remove half to a pan and add a stock cube
    3) Whizz remaining onion and apple with other burger ingredients in blender until smoother.
    4) Make into patties, mine made 21 from this mixture in total (seemed remarkable that it made this many!)
    5) Fry the burgers a few at a time in some oil or bake in the oven, I would cover them if you do this as they will dry out easily.
    6) Cook up potatoes and other veg, add about 1 litre cooking water to onion and apple in pan and simmer until reduced to form sauce

I used 11 of the patties for serving up. I had 3 boys around for dinner and they can eat a lot, I initially gave them 3 of the patties each with their potato, carrot, apple sauce and 'broccoli'. I had 2 patties and that was enough for me but the boys I think would have liked more meat on their plates. If Shirley does this she needs to hide the remaining mix or get rid of the other burgers because I let the boys eat more after I had conducted my survey and they would have eaten them all!

They really liked the recipe and were amazed when I told them about the challenge and about you Weezl, lovely boys will be more than happy to have more free meals if I want to try any other recipes. None of us are too badly off but they liked the idea of making cheaper meals and said they thought they would be able to manage to do all of it. Lots of washing up from this meal!

I think if I made them again I would add another 50g onion and 100g breadcrumbs to the burger mix to bulk it out further!

I had lots of fun and feel it was a great success!

    :T:T:T:T

  • So, because I got things in bulk to make it cheaper I now have a fridge with 250g mince, some cooking bacon, 14 eggs, 1.7kg onions and 1 kg potatoes. Soup anyone? ;)
Sure I will use the stuff up but seems a little silly now!
