Yes I have applied for a remark of AQE - not expecting any change but at least I know I've tried my best for my child! But that's between me, hubby and the AQE (ok and to everyone reading this!), I'll only admit to it if the score goes up!

Golden Anemore, Stanjnr - thanks for the info, please let us know how you get on? Dont mind me asking Stanjnr - wot score did your child get or wot quintelle is he/she in? Anyway keep my fingers crossed for you!
  • 4th quintile, August birthday, would love to know the raw score to see how close/far off it was from his practice tests in school but will never know, even with the remark we will only get the same results page we originally got, no extra details.
Rest of his friends are in 1st & 2nd quintile and he had been on par with them most days, he also had his off days when we felt like banging our heads off a brick wall - was a big shock on the day, we had it in our heads that we needed 100 when we opened the letter - so now we are only expecting a high school place! Will be a pleasant surprise if we get anywhere else!
  • In my personal opinion, I think AQE didn't give us accurate statistics for 2 possible reasons. They are:

They didn't think it was that relevant, sure just issue the same illustrative guide as before, save on a lot of admin work.

    or

They have used a pilot marking scheme which after the results, has presented itself has being unfair and novice like. Possibly, the standerised scoring system hasn't worked out as well as they thought it would and if by showing the results and the paritcular ages of the children, if someone techy converted this into a bar chart, it might not look at all fair.

I also feel we might not receive any true details of scores and ages until after the transfer procedure at the end of may. Possibly AQE will be hoping most parents selected their first choice and have successfully obtained a place. This would make for a lot less backlash for them.

I really do worry about the children whose parents didn't choose the school or schools they wanted due to being put off by what was interpreted as a low score.

My child scored in the late 80's and although I wasn't put off applying for the grammar schools my child and I originally wanted, I certainly had no encouragement whatsoever, to do so and I know of a lot of parents who just didn't bother applying for grammar schools.

If this is the unfortunate case for some parents in May, realising that they possibly could of gotten a place but felt put off by the lack of information and the poor illustrative guide, I suspect AQE are in for a whole lot of anguish and trouble.
  • Have AQE actually said they didn't give accurate stats i.e. the quintile score ranges, or are they simply saying they are going to give more stats?
  • They have just said they will give more stats in due course.

It is of my own opinion that the scores/quintilles are unlikely to be as exact of the illustrative guide we received on the morning of the test.

They sent us the exact same illustrative guide before the test and said in the information that this sheet was completely illustrative and would change according to scores. It didn't.

    .........................................................................................

Age standardisation has either been taken from template if this test hasn't been piloted and if this is the case then one must question the validity of this approach. Or it may have been locally standardised i.e. for the pupils who took the tests.

I also think knowledge of the raw scores for each paper would be of interest to parents and cannot understand why this hasn't been released. As would a statement about percentiles and the approach to age adjustment - pilot, template or local.

Age adjustment should ensure that the brightest children in each particular age group achieve the higher scores. A crude measure could be to statistically analyse subgroups in 113-116, 117-120 etc, to ensure that in the higher scoring groups that all months are roughly equally represented.

Yes, we are dealing with an unregulated test; however, it is determining who will attend state funded grammar schools. This is therefore, a matter of public interest and the Department of Education in my opinion should organise an external review of both of the tests used, to ensure that they have actually been set at a level that will discriminate and that they haven't discriminated.

I really hope that the statistics released are informative and that any statistical correction has been valid. Thank you to Kingston for all of your amusing postings, your percentile query via Victoria kept me amused for some time.
  • Ms Optimistic - if you look at both score ranges sent out by AQE i think you'll find the illustrative one is slightly different from the actual one.
  • I think Kingston 2730 has been kidnapped byt the AQE, she hasn't posted anything for 2 days.:D
  • Maybe she has gone undercover within enemy lines and she will come out with all the info. we require??!
