I think people need to stop trying to work out if a score is a "high B1" or whatever in trying to work out whether their child will get into a particular school. In my view this isn't really relevant. What is relevant is if there are 140 places and 140 kids with a higher mark than your kid apply then you don't get in.
Sorry but in my view its totally relevant. Thats the only thing we have to go on at moment in trying to predict if they will have a chance. This is why the AQE gave out the chart that allows us to compare the scores so we have got some sort of an idea. Yes its not going to be 100 % totally accurate but its unfortunately the only tool we have been given for gauging whether the score is good enough for a particular school. Yes it is 'relevant that there are 140 places for 140 kids' but unfortunately we have no way of judging how many children will have high enough marks to gain one of these 140 places so while equating the aqe scores to the old grades may not be an exact science, IMHO it is the only tool we have at the moment:)0 -
My son got 95, and we are very proud of him. We have put down 3 grammars and 2 secondary schools.
We will just have to wait and see who applys where and with what scores. It's impossible trying to work it all out, so the form has gone and there is nothing much more we can do until May.0 -

Twins in his class and one got an A and the other a C1 but they were at an integrated PS so both boys were accepted to Lagan - 1 in the grammar stream and the other in the non-selective stream. Don't know if you've considered this or if it would be an option.
Good luck.
hi again based in bangor girl wants glenola boy bangor grammar, just have to wait and c brain fried trying to put diff scenarios together!!!:eek:0 -
Folks - Cant believe that I am still fixated on these marks. I see from the 1st page of the sample test on the AQE site that there were 32 marks for English and 32 marks for Maths - 64 marks per paper available - on the 2 papers that would be a total of 128. This happens to be the top score? How then does the mark of 145 be reachable? 17 marks for a child who attained full marks and has a late birthday!!! Don't think so. (All for aged related calculations by the way)
Grades should have been given even the D grade, I can picture that child with 55 quietly searching for someone with a lower mark. Not a nice place to be.0 -
Edith999 Glenola - Wots their intake for previous years? If they have taken B2s in the past I think you'll get in. If you had said Grosvenor/Sullivan, I would have thought Hmmmm....0

Bonno, I honestly don't know about the marks but I agree with you re they should have given out grades as in past. AQE's reason for giving out scores as opposed to grades is that children won't feel as bad if they are given a poor mark ie. D. IMHO they have made it even worse, like you said, as now not only does a child know they've done poorly but the ones who are at the absolute bottom will know this. The marking system that AQE have put in place has set up a hierarchy with the top marks being the elite and the kids at the very bottom struggling with self esteem issues, not to mention the confusion it has caused for the parents and principles alike.0 -
To any of those worried that they have missed information on the form I recall our principal stating that whilst the school returned the forms to the Education Board on 19th Feb that we had until 10th March to make any adjustments to the form, change our minds etc. He said all we had to do in that instance was contact the Board - I assume then the Bds spend a couple weeks verifying that they have all the forms they are supposed to have etc before they start processing them/ sending them on to the relevant schools0
