  • I kind of see where the Principal of Ballyclare is coming from. At the end of the day the kids who didn't take AQE or GL tests will be applying there as they can't apply for Grammar Schools. He obviously wants to give them precedence. In some ways it would be unfair for those who have a list of grammars on a form and who don't get into any of them to jump in front of the kids who had Ballyclare down as their first preference.

I have just looked up this standardised table and a raw mark of 34 out of 40 gives a standardised score range of 5 marks between youngest and oldest.
  • It has to be said well done for them for striving for excellence but it does seem a bit extreme that they won't accept a child unless they place the school as first choice. If all the schools did that the clearance system wouldn't work too well. That being said, it would be great if all schools were that dedicated!
It would be great if alot more secondary schools had the dedication as you said. This year parents are worried if their children are borderline, do they put down grammar 1st and take a chance of getting in or do they put this school down as 1st choice. Could be left with situation don't get into grammar and this good secondary school won't accept them as it isnt down as 1st choice.
  • Hello and welcome to the new people.

Stressed Mum, I hope what you have heard is right as my child is on 104 Q3 and Grosvenor is our first choice followed by Methody. :j

My friend's son is at a local primary to Grosvenor and received the letter advising them to put Grosvenor first if that is where they want their child to go.
I heard the info re Methody via the Methody Prep head. The Methody head is expecting the cut off to be around 100, given previous years' intakes, but obviously this will depend on applicants.

I haven't included a secondary school in my choices for the same reason that others have posted here - the secondary schools in East Belfast are not somewhere I would want to send my child. My backup plan is boarding at Victoria, but I'm hoping my daughter will get into her first choice grammar ok with 106!

Hope this is correct...this is our first choice..did he seem confident about this info......
  • Yes, he did seem pretty confident, given that they won't know for certain until the results are in! I was pretty reassured having spoken to him.

Bonno, are you looking at same table as me, the one on Examswot? I checked it and the maximum difference between children with 12 months age gap was 3 marks, the 5 marks only came into effect when the age gap was 1yr and 4 months which will never happen in this country.
  • Thanks Stressed Mum.

We got that letter from Grosvenor on Saturday. I have to say that Grosvenor have brilliant throughout the whole process. Very professional and very caring about the kids sitting the test. :T :T :T I really hope my son is wearing their uniform in September. The Methody news is encouraging too as its our 2nd choice. :)

I'm so glad to hear this - it is all really encouraging on the Grosvenor front. Its our first choice too so I'm keeping my fingers, toes and everything else crossed that he gets in.
  • I wish our local school would send out letters encouaging us to apply and what they think will get in this year, your schools seem to be much more on the ball about encouraging pupils and parents. Is this because of the competition for the best pupils or is it always like that in the city schools?
