thriftmonster wrote: »Newtownabbey Mum - we have had the rejection bus pass letter from BELB already so I can get on with getting a paid pass from Translink. Have you handed in the application form to the school already - it took about 3 weeks for me to get rejected (I knew I would be as we live closer to Grosvenor)

Newtownabbey Mum
I haven't received any word regarding bus pass for my son going to BRA yet. I posted mine a few days after the letter came offering his school place.0 -
Bought the uniform this morning. :j Ironically it cost less than the PE kit and that was with the wool blazer.
Incidentally did anyone get a stationery list from Grosvenor? It just dawned on me today that we never actually got one when son asked if we could go to WH Smith. :eek:0 -
No - that thought has crossed my mind a couple of times too when I have read others on here getting calculators and dictionaries etc! I hope we don't get presented with it on the first day of term!!!:shocked:0

£925 per year at RBAI
Not sure if there is a compulsory/voluntary breakdown of this, but that's what we're paying.
We were there on Wednesday, and I have to say I was impressed with the school.
Hi Jim,
Yes the total fee is just that, unfortunately no option but to pay the full amount! Unlike Methody who has £140 capital, £390 voluntary.
My son is also attending in the new year, he loved his visit on Wednesday past, never actually seem him with such a big smile on his face! He is placed in Pirrie house.. which he is over the moon with! :j0 -
Fresh transfer guidance on admissions to post-primary schools in Northern Ireland has been published
The department of education reiterated its opposition to testing.
"State-funded post-primary schools' boards of governors should not exclude children through the use of the socially divisive and educationally unsound practice of 'academic' selection," it said.
Transfer test policy has been mired in controversy with determined to scrap selection and the Democratic Unionist Party adamantly opposed. Many schools have set their own independent tests.
The official guidance recommends a menu of admissions criteria including prioritising those entitled to free school meals and those with a brother or sister attending the school.
The department said it aimed to ensure admissions decisions were fair and gave each child the opportunity to reach his or her full potential and that the arrangements for admissions were clear and understood.
However Stormont education committee chairman and DUP Assembly member Mervyn Storey said: "This is a minister (Caitriona Ruane) who is more worried about the pursuit of educational jihad than she is about providing leadership in education.
"We have seen that over a raft of issues and this is an example of just how out of her depth this minister is in terms of dealing with the real issues affecting many in Northern Ireland."Well I Love Tv And I Love T. Rex, I Can See Through Your Skirt I've Got X-Ray Spex0 -

Just quick question to those of you on the other side of transfer papers. My DD going into p7 and averaging mid 70's in her practice papers. Do you think this would be enough to get her into a grammar school of her choice?
Thanks for any info.
Hi, its really hard to judge. My daughter always done exceptionally well in practice test and gained ususally 85% +. when she done the test she scored 112 which was at the top of the second band which to be honest was a bit of a shock as i was expecting a higher score but her head master said it was an excellant score and she got into her first choice of school which was BRA. i know some of her friends that have gained grammer school places with lower scores so there is a very good chance of a grammer school place. i also had my daughter tutored. even though she was getting very good scores i really felt that that extra push would do no harm. not for everyone but something i def dont regret doing. hope everything works out ok for your daughter.0 -
Bobs, I echo what Newtownabbey Mum said. My son consistently got between 70-72 out of 75 in practice papers. However in the actual tests scored 104 which was lower than we had anticpated. In real terms though we later found out that this was a good score.
The best advice I can give you is:
Keep her at the practice papers
Put down all the grammar schools which you would consider sending her to - do not be disuaded by anyone telling you different. I know kids who are going to schools a bit away from their homes when they could have went to the school beside them. The Principal had told them they wouldn't get in.0
