My biggest daily commute was 50 miles each way, on single carriageway, winding, rural roads. Usually my jobs have been 10-25 miles away.

    The biggest issues are:
    - cost of fuel to get to/from work and whether you can afford it.
    - what do you do if the car breaks down. On my 50 mile route the car would have been dragged to a garage 20 miles from my home and I'd be left without any vehicle to get anywhere - and there was no public transport that would get me to work.

So, think about the cost, the breakdowns, the alternatives to using a car if you get stuck.

At least 250 - 300 miles per day 3 or 4 days a week. Not much work about in Wales so forced to travel to pay my mortgage
If I were doing that mileage to/from work, then I'd be staying in a local/cheap B&B four nights a week. It'd be cheaper than running a car.

I did used to do this, 200 miles each way it was, so I would travel up early on a Monday morning and come back on a Friday night.
  • mine is about 40 miles each way, but only go there and back about 4-5 times a month :-)

  • To put it into perspective OH was once advised by the Jobcentre when on JSA that she would have to take jobs within a 30 mile radius when she didnt drive and it was higher if you do drive. So i assume 25 miles isnt classed as excessive.

I used to do 30 miles each way on a moped :( before i could drive brilliant in summer but hellish in winter

A previous job was 30 miles away, I had that job for 12 years and the trip never bothered me, I looked on it as thinking/unwind time.
Coincidently the trip to my parents house was on the same roads but 12 miles further on and I sometimes dreaded that journey, not visiting my parents but the extra 12 miles seemed to take forever to do.
  • 1 job was 45 miles each way and when you take in the cost fuel+time travelling makes you wonder if it really is worth it on a fixed daily rate after cost removed and tax etc no better off than being on the dole. No wonder people dont want to work!!!!!!!!

27 miles each way, takes between 45-60 mins usually. Like a previous reply said, I use it as unwind time, listen to an audiobook usually. The cost of petrol is a big drawback though, approx £50 per week. I'm hoping to work from home full time in the near future, fingers crossed.
  • Don't know in miles but it takes me 1.5 hours each way on 2 trains :(
