6 miles to work. Driving in the morning approx 20 mins, coming home more like 30 to 40mins due to increased traffic. I've done the by bus & bus train and the morning journey can be done in 35 mins and the return journey will be in excess of due to traffice.
In a previous job the commute was 120 miles return mostly all motorway and normally took an hour in the morning and more in the evening. Hated it. Not the driving just the job.
Something to consider is the cost of travel and is there alternatives i.e. in case of car trouble or the road being closed.

Definately don't think 25 miles is excessive - as others said it depends on the method of transport and total travel time. I'd say a commute of more than 90 minutes each way (3hrs in total) is getting to be too much. But then if I'd been out of work for a year I'd probably accept a 2hr or more commute each way just to get back on the job ladder again.

Currently about 2 miles, can't drive so get the bus or walk. Office is relocating this year and it's 25ish miles away in the middle of nowhere. It will be asking for lifts of various people or using public transport - 3 buses and a 20 minute walk - total time 2.5 hours each way!!! Not happy as you can imagine.

I'd gladly help out a colleague for a small fee. I currently pick up a colleague on the way to work, which takes me around half a mile out my way, and adds a minute or so to my journey. He pays me (despite my protestation that it's too much!) £15 per week, based on the logic that the bus costs more per week, and is much less comfortable, and less reliable.

Would you be able to come to some kind of arrangement with one, or more, of your colleagues?
    £1 / 50p 2011 holiday flight + hotel expenses = £98.50600

HSBC 8% 12mth regular savings = £80 out of a maximum remaining allowance of £2500

    "3 months' salary" reserve = £00 / £3600

I've worked at home to 40 miles away in my different jobs.

Sometimes travelling 40 miles away was quicker than travelling 5 miles as the 40 miles was on motorways and the 5 miles was via bus and train/tube.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Dunno how many miles but an hour on the underground is sending me nuttier than I am already!

Time and the quality of travel are more important than distance as others have said.
Opinion, advice and information are different things. Don't be surprised if you receive all 3 in response. :D

25 miles each way, but use public transport. Takes about an hour from home to work. would be a lot quicker by car, but the job doesnt pay enough for the cost of fuel & parking !

I could use the the bus but as it would mean getting 2 buses there and back it would take longer than going by car obviously plus im not overly confident in the buses

Yes, in theory, that's the intention but..... most of my colleagues will be doing their visits to clients either on the way in to work, or on the way home, so it's going to be different every day. i.e. they may not be actually going to the office until lunchtime or leaving at lunchtime to do their visits. Add to that annual leave, sick days, etc., suddenly the logistics look more difficult. Maybe I am anticipating something that won't happen but in reality I think it will be a bit stressful.
